I thought having a great-great-aunt who had a pub for over 50 years might be one of the more enjoyable aspects of research. But it is proving one of the most frustrating!
Sarah Griffiths, with first husband Frederick Thatcher, then second husband Evan Powell, then for 31 years alone until her death in 1911, was landlady at the Full Moon, 117 High Street, Abersychan, Monmouthshire. Feisty lady, I would guess.
I can find no trace of it now.
It would appear she was a tenant, but who was the landlord/brewery? Were pubs mostly brewery-owned in the last half of the C19?
Her successor advertised “Celebrated Castle Ales”, but I can’t pin them down either.
Any information about the Full Moon or any suggestions/clues would be most welcome.
