Would like to know if anyone knows anything about this family......trying to trace Ellen who was married to James Hodges, both born 1855/56. His family is easily traced but Ellen is a mystery....she was my maternal Ggrandmother and died in Bury Lancs in 1928....I cant find any trace of a maiden name or birthcertificate. In fact nothing until she married james.
I remeber my mothers elderly cousin telling me she had three marriage certificates for Ellen but seeing she married james in herearly 20s I find this hard to believe.
On the other hand I have come across aa census for Monmouth Workhouse in 1861? and listed are four children named Hodges, one named Ellen and age corresponds with what I have.
Also found a court record from same period with an Elizabeth Hodges being given 6 months for"larceny from rivers".
If these are the correct children, maybe the certificates arnt marriage cert. but adoption papers....
Being in Australia makes it immpossible to go to check up personally but if any one knows anything about this mysterious lady it would be wonderful news..
Incidently on later census forms when she was married and had a family, she lists three different places as "place of birth" and not knowing the area dont know wether they are surrounding villages or if she just didnt know were she was born.
Would be gratefull for any leads on this.
