Residence on Mrge Cert only indicates he nominally resided there for the previous minimum of 6 weeks and may have little or no bearing on the location of his birth or even the location of his baptism which could have taken place in any other parish at any time after his birth.

It is far to early to assume you can not locate his baptism pre 1837 it is very rare to really confirm a location of birth. Do not confuse Baptism & Burials with Birth and Death.

Pre Sept 1837 all mrge must take place in the established church by the law of the land. This does not relate to Baptism or Burial, which could take place in non-conformist Chapels. There is IMHO only about 5% of non-conformist records for Pembrokeshire deposited at the Record Office.

It is quite possible for James to have been baptised chapel, but maintained established church thereafter. My own research has all one family ancestors baptised established church and all convert to Deer Park Baptist Tenby in late 19th century. It is possible that James was born at Herbandston but was baptised chapel, you will need to learn and understand (if you do not already) what a Chapel Circuit was at this time with only one minister.

Go to ; http://cat.llgc.org.uk/cgi-bin/gw/chameleon?skin=profeb&...

Select start date 1750 end date 1858 click save

For Diocese click on down arrow and select Tyddewi/St David’s

You have 4 choices to then select I suggest you only use one initially and from the Chose drop down select name and enter Mortimer, at this point do not use more, the less you enter the more you get returned.

Scroll down and select search

You are now looking for some possible relationship to your James.

You will now have at least 4 worth looking at although Oystermouth can probably be discounted.

My own ancestor gives a different Cty(1841) and different place of birth in every census 1851 to 1901, he was baptised at none. Of full age is nominally over 21, experience shows that in most cases the age is nearer 21 than older but ~ there is always that but.

The alternative form of search is to spread out from Herbrandston and search each parish using a good parish map from

For families that moved around read “Wills and Thereabouts” by A.J. Camp
