My grandfather was William Arthur Knowles Some family members say that he was born in England but I have a copy of his application for citizenship with the point of origin as Nassau, Bahamas. He was a passenger on the ship "Lady Shea". This was mid 1800"s. He had two brothers, one who evidently was named Courtney Joseph Knowles because my father told me that he and I were named after one of William Arthur's brothers. My grandfather married Araminta (Nina) Garvin and they had 12 children, 3 born in Key West, FL and the other 9 were born in Tampa, FL. Any info would be appreciated. We have a family reunion beginning June 27 in Orlando, FL.

Greetings,
I REALLY hope you guys can help me! :-) I'm looking for information on Lionel Wilfred Russell Sr. born July 26 1901/1902. He was born on the island of Great Inagua in the Bahamas and immigrated to the United States via Miami around 1920. He is my Great Grandfather. His wife's name was Anna from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and they had two children: Barbara and Lionel Jr (he was born December 11 1933).

I'm not sure where they were married, what my Great Grandfather's parents names were or where they were from? ANY information is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I am doing some research for a friend and have hit a wall when researching the Bahamas. Her grandparents are Englis James and Doloris (Deloris?) SANDS. Englis died in 1985, Dolores 2001. I believe they lived on Abaco, mostly around Marsh Harbor, but that's just assumption on my part. If I could get a finger to point me in the right direction? My email is ballegator@gmail.com

Hi Gerrie,

This is a response to an old post of yours. I hope it reaches you.

I have been researching Lightbourn(e)(and variant spellings of the surname) in Bermuda, the Bahamas, USA and elsewhere for msny years. I see that I have Mary Rebecca Lightbourn and Rev. James Horne Darrell and their descendants in my database.

I am most certainly descended from the Bermuda Lightbourn(e)s. My 3rd great grandfather was Benjamin Lightbourne who eventually settled in Westmoreland County Pennsylvania around 1790. The surname somehow got changed to Lightburn around 1800. Many Lightburns in the U.S. are his descendants.

I would be happy to share genealogical information of mutual interest. Please let me know.

Regards,
Bob Lightburn

Took a quick look at GenForum. It's been 13 years since I focused on this question so I simply copied what I posted at the time:

While I don't believe that Thomas and Celia connect to my TYNES line I too have long believed that Sarah (TYNES) ATHERTON was their daughter. I have now come to believe that Thomas must have had an earlier wife, possibly a PRUD[D]EN. The proof is a bit complicated, and I will not attempt to provide all the details, but bear with me.

Nathaniel TYNES, grandson of Thomas, died intestate in 1803. His estate was divided among nine blood aunts and uncles (or their heirs). Four of the heirs were his mother's sisters and five were his father's siblings.

Penelope (ATHERTON) BRUNSON was, as her mother's only child, was entitled to a one ninth share of the estate.

Penelope is also mentioned in her father's will of 1787 as being "ye true and only heir to the same [a half share of land in Bermuda] being descended from Peter PRUDDEN of the afroesd. island."

For Penelope to inherit a full share of Nathaniel TYNES' estate she had to be Sarah (TYNES) ATHERTON's only surviving child.

For Penelope to be "ye true and only heir" of Peter PRUDDEN Sarah (TYNES) ATHERTON had to be the descendant of Peter.

Celia (WEST) TYNES, therefore, could NOT be Sarah (TYNES) ATHERTON's mother. If she were the PRUDDEN "connection" all her children would have been heirs to the Bermuda land and, I believe, Penelope would have no claim on the property. In fact it was Jeptha ATHERTON who leased the property in 1761, shortly after Peter PRUDDEN's death.

While I realize there may be some holes in this proof I do believe that it clearly raises the STRONG possibility of a first wife for Thomas Sr.

And a short addition:

As transcribed in Knorr's "Marriages of Southampton Co. VA" Jeptha (Jephtha) ATHERTON married Sarah TYNES 13 Sept. 1760. Surety Richard KELLO and Wit. Jona. GODWIN.

A little more than two years later (11 March 1763), according to the same source, Jepthah ATHERTON married the widow Elizabeth JARRETT of St. Luke's Parish. Surety: Peter BUTTS of Nottoway Parish.

I see that Mark has not responded to your post about Peter Prud(d)en. His web page and the cite you provide at the end of the post came from work that he and I did some 10 years ago. I don't have all of our emails any more but many may still be posted at the TYNES section of GenForum. Long story short the relationships mention are based on a series of North Carolina wills involving several estates. Because of the division of property in this series of documents there is no doubt of the relationship of Sarah TYNES to Peter Pruden. I can also attest to the marriage having seen the volume Mark references myself. I hope the discussion is still at GenForum as I would hate to attempt a recreation of the legal threads. You may contact me directly if you wish at
mbcjo@cox.net
Cliff Ocheltree

What were the names of the two Thompson children? Golden & Carry are on a 1910 census with the family of Richard & Anna Knowles and they are the children of Walter Henry Thompson and Drucilla Adrilla Kemp. Walter & Drucilla's daughter (Miriam Golden Thompson) is my husband's Grandmother. I would be interesting to hear back. Walter & Drucilla were both from the Bahamas and immigrated to Key West, Fl. To make you more confused, they also had another child named Camille that was on the 1910 census with the family of John & Ella Gaite also of Key West. I understand Drucilla died a short time after the birth of Carry (Carrie) in 1902 and sometime before 1910.

It took two years to repair their ship and return to Nova Scotia. He would have been a young man born in 1758 and came to America in 1775. The British conscripted the able bodied men to fight for them and took care of the women. Mike said there were a lot on McPhees in the Islands.
Enjoy hearing from you, Bill Mc wmcphee@aol.com
