So here's my puzzle...

In tracing my wife's family (surname is Holter), we find information in census records for her GGGgrandfather Louis Holter (1804 - ????) indicating he was born in Cuba and later settled in the Shrewsbury PA and Baltimore MD areas. Louis eventually married a woman named Mary but I have no information on when or where she was born. We've also seen information that the Holter family was of German descent which the surname supports.

My question is, what might be the connection between Germany and Cuba in the late 1790s or early 1800s that would see this family's immigration there?
