Dear Mr. Flores Tabarez,

I had a great grandmother, Carmen Herrera, from Spain. She was over 100 when she appeared on the "Queen for a Day" television show, nominated by her daughter, Blanca Aurora Fernandez Herrera (my paternal grandmother), from Santiago de Cuba but living in Havana by then (the 1950s).

Carmen Herrera was rather eccentric, short and slight as I remember her and quite fond of flamenco. Her daughter Blanca seemed to me beautifully Sephardic in her features, fair skin and thick hair.

Do you have any information on the Spanish Herreras who came to Santiago?

Thank you for your research, Ines Diaz-Owen

I have a photo I bought from an antique shop. It is a postcard type photo with 2 women and 4 men, and 1 baby. On the back it gives the names of the men as Walt, Roy, John and Ross, women listed as Alice all last name of Suarin, the woman holding the baby is listed as Naomi J. Jennie. If these ancestors are yours please contact me. The lady named Naomi is an older women. I would like for this photo to go to a direct descendant of this family.

Surnames: DE VERA, Vera
My great-grandfather (on my mother's side) was: Manuel de Vera y Verdura (he was an attorney & senator in Matanzas)
His parents were : Manuel de Vera y Saenz (I believe also an attorney-not sure)
His grandfather was: Felix de Vera y Morejohn & grandmother was Matilde Sanza de Monjarere
His paternal great-grandfather was: LUIS TOMAS DE VERA Y LAFFITE & his great-grandmother was: RITA EUSEBIA MOREJON y MOREJON.
This Luis TOMAS de Vera was supposedly one of the first in Cuba of the Vera family orgien from Spain. When he arrived in Cuba, the Spanish Government appointed him as Capt. of the Port of Matanzas and I believe that as a gift- the government of Spain gave him various caballerias of land in the area that was named "Versailles"--my grandfather's records say that prior to that time, this land may have been called "Yucayo" by the Indians.
Anyways, Luis TOMAS de Vera y Laffite & his wife Rita had six children. 1. Quintinia (paper too worn out); 2. Euglogio, 3. Luisa 4. Cecilio 5. Jose Higinio and 6. Felix.
My great-grandfather was the grandson of "Felix de Vera".
-----
It appears that there were two saints related to the Vera family-- San Ignacio De Loyolo y San Francisco de Borja.

If you have any other information about my family and it's Spanish origen, please e-mail me.
THANKS SO MUCH.

It was very pleasant surprise to find all these messages about the de Vera family. It seems there are different ones because of place of origin. Luis Tomás de Vera y de la Fita, o de Laffitte, was born
in Madrid, España, had no connection with the Islas Canarias. His documents can be found in thel Museo Naval in Madrid they were presented when he requested to be admitted in the Real Marina Española. Venancio de Vera has his nobility information presented to be admitted in the Real Orden de Carlos III and was Luis Tomás' first cousin he was Ayuda de Cámara of HRM Carlos III and of HRM Carlos IV, like his father.. Luis Tomás father was Josep Antonio de Vera-Valencia y Salazar, born in Madrid, captain and later, brigadier of the Reales Guardas de Infantería Española y governor of the castle and city of Alburquerque in Spain.
In the book Historia de Familia Cubanas, the Morejón family can be found and is really Rodríguez Morejón.

I'm looking for information about the Veras in my family. Here's what I know:

Vicente Vera married Ynés Díaz. (Not sure if they were born in Cuba or Spain.) Their son was Vicente Vera Díaz born in Sancti Spíritus, Cuba.
Then, Vicente Vera Díaz married (Amparo) Hermenegilda-de-los-Desamparados Yero (daughter of Eduviges and the father's name I don't know since she was orphaned when her parents died in the war)
Child of Vicente Vera Díaz and Hermenegilda Yero was Amparo Vera Yero born in 1901 in Sancti Spíritus, Cuba.
If anyone has any information that they could help me with, I'd really appreciate it. Tambien hablo español. Gracias.
