Roger Valladares, Ph.D., 77 years old, founder and CEO of Vallacare Health Services, Inc., died at his home in Punta Gorda Isles on May 25, 2003.

He was born on April 27, 1926 in Camaguey, Cuba, and fled to the United States in 1960 along with his pregnant wife, 2 young daughters and $1.30 in change. Mr. Valladares left his position as a bank executive for the Federal Reserve Bank of Cuba to pursue a new life full of freedom and opportunities for his family in Youngstown, Ohio.

He was employed at RMI Titanium, Inc., in Ohio until his retirement at the age of 55. After putting his four daughters through medical school, Mr. Valladares moved his family to Orlando where he set up his daughter's medical office. Seven years later, Mr. Valladares, his wife and family came to Punta Gorda where their eldest daughter, Dr. Navija Valladares practices medicine. In 1997 Vallacare Health Services, Inc. opened its doors thanks to the determination, knowledge and desire of Mr. Valladares to create a true "Family Practice." Mr. Roger Valladares touched the lives of everyone he met. His faith, dignity, integrity, honesty and devotion to his family were extraordinary. Just knowing him enriched your life.

Mr. Valladares was a Knight of Columbus for 61 years, reaching the third degree, a Eucharistic Minister, a world traveler, had a Ph.D. in Computer Science, but most of all, Mr. Valladares was an exceptional husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend.

Mr. Valladares is survived by his wife of 55 years, Navija Achkar Valladares, his daughters, Dr. Navija Valladares, Dr. Ivette Valladares-Barrios, Dr. Jeanette Valladares-Rivero and Dr. Blanca Valladares-Nutter, their husbands, three grandchildren, Roger Rene Barrios, Giovanna Ivette Barrios, and Emely Ivette Rivero. He also leaves behind his brother and sisters-in-law in Ohio and nephew, Dr. Tony Achkar.

A visitation is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, at the Punta Gorda Chapel of Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, 635 E. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Punta Gorda. Entombment will follow at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens, Punta Gorda. Arrangements are being made by Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Punta Gorda Chapel.
