Is it possible to get a death or cemetery record from Cuba for someone who died June 1919? We are looking for our grandfather Juan Hernandez who died in Habana.

Thanks,

Gerry

My Crandfather died in Habana , Cuba in 1900. He is buried at the Colon Cemetery which is the largest Cemetery in Habana. Yo may want to contact them. I would probably start with Havanatur in Havana and let them direct you to the proper agencies.

Jane,

Thank you so much! I sent a letter to the archives in Havana a couple months ago and have note received a reply. They may have ignored the letter or maybe it's setting in a pile of requests!

Jane,

Sorry I cut off so quick. I'm on my laptop and I'm not use to using it that much. I will try to contact the cemetery in Havana. Thank you for your reply and help.

Gerry by any chance did your grandfather have a daughter named Tomasa Hernandez. Just curious because my father's mother's maiden name was Hernandez.

Angeline,

I'm not sure!

Actually, this is my husbands family. His grandfather was Ernesto Del Rio (b 14 Oct 1896, Tampa) who married Herminia Hernandez (b 11 Jan 1898, Cuba) in Tampa, Florida, 15 Feb 1915. His father was Atonio Del Rio, born in Madrid, Spain 21 Dec 1869.

Herminia's father was Julian Hernandez (b 24 June 1862, Cuba) and mother Mercedes Villaverde Pages (b 3 Aug 1865, Cuba). They married 5 June 1882 in Key West, Fl.

Mercedes Villaverde Pages had a sister names Tomasa (b 5 Jan 1866, Cuba) who married Rafael Hernandez Noda in New Orleans, La on 26 April 1877 and then Rafael Padron 10 Sept 1918 in Tampa, Fl. She died 20 June 1949 in Tampa, Fl.

Her death certificate says she was born 5 Jan 1866. This would have made her 11 when she married Rafael Hernandez Noda. I think the birth year on the death certificate is probably wrong but Rafael was born in 1942. Of course, this could have been a marriage of convenience!

The death certificate says her father was Francisco (Frank) Pages and mother Carmen Parez)
I still have a lot of work to do and since I don't know Spanish that well, it is very difficult.

(I have a picture of Tomasa and she was beautiful!)

I have a cousin who is also working on the family and says when the family came from Cuba they used the name Pages because it was more anglo! They were cigar makers and traveled wherever there was work. They fled Cuba during the Revolution, going to Louisiana.

Thanks for responding, I hope we have a connection! Please feel free to contact me at gldelrio@bellsouth.net.

Gerry
