Re: Diggens Family St.Kitts
I came across this family in census records from Suffolk, England that listed Diggens children born in St Kitts and in a will for a Thomas Diggens of Coddenham, Suffolk that mentions his son Henry Diggens living in St Christopher, West Indies.
I was looking for a different Diggens family from Suffolk. I suspect that they are distant cousins to the Diggens family that I am researching, so I have kept some notes about them.
I saw the will in Suffolk Registered Wills, 1854-1857, LDS Microfilm # 0097020, page 86 / will number 54 of the wills for 1855. It said Thomas was a farmer in Coddenham and he had land in nearby Ashbocking, which he let to tenants. In addition to Henry, the will mentions other children: Edward, Francis George (a draper in Norwich, Norfolk), Mary, Elizabeth, and Harriett.
Census records indicate that Henry was born circa 1810 in Walsham Le Willows, Suffolk and his wife, Hannah S., was born circa 1813 in Ipswich, Suffolk. Boyd’s Marriage Index lists a marriage for Henry Diggens and Hannah S Kerridge in 1836 in Grundisburgh, Suffolk near Coddenham. This is probably them. Census records indicate that Henry’s father was also born in Walsham.
Parish records from Walsham have been transcribed on the IGI and include the following:
--Thomas King Diggens, baptised 20 April 1775, son of Thomas Diggens and Susanna
--Thomas Diggons and Susan Collen, married 9 October 1800
--Henry Diggens, baptised 16 April 1810, son of Thomas Diggens and Susan Collens
Rootsweb’s Diggens-L Archive online contains a transcription of burials in Coddenham. These include:
--Thomas Diggens, died age 81, buried 13 April 1855
--Henry Diggens, died age 52, buried 28 March 1862
The IGI and burial transcriptions for Coddenham also include records for other members of this family.
