Thank you for your response. I am still interested in my grandson's ancestors in the DeBrot and DeHaset families. I have my previous paperwork at my home, and am presently at grandsons' uncles' home (paternal, not maternal). Some time ago a distant relative was kind enough to send a picture of two of Dehaset ancestors for my three grandsons. Another responded from Holland. In October, I will email you with these grandson's maternal lines. Sincerely, LD

Dear Garrick,

As you are excited and mixed up to know that there is more about your ancestors, so am I when receiving your message.
Welcome to our ancestry search and thanks for connecting us.

We have a complete family tree of Piar-Marchena family tree.
I can help you with most of all. The Piar family was easy to seach because of our uncle Manuel Piar of the thirth generaion. Garrit, our first ancestor was born in Rome and was named Luis Piar. The Piar family had a very rich and interesting history.

Concerning the Marchena family we know but a few. We can not derive there history. Who was the firts Marchena on Bonaire? It was told that we are ancestors of Abraham de Marchena but I doubt that. Our key to the whole mistery is the misterious person who is called Anna Perina Marchena. Who was this woman, who were her parents? Cornelis Marten wrote a book in wich she appears telling her great contribution in the Bonaire society. Do you have info about her? I would like to know of wich Marchena family tree you are so I can send you more info. My brother Sideny and I are really working on keeping in touch with our families so I am so greatful to you for connecting.

My email is : elvismachena@hotmail.com. Then it would be eaier to sent you the whole family tree.

I'm ok and I'm looking forward for your answer.

Elvis Marchena

Hi everybody!
Hope you all are doing well.

This message is to Ileene, but also Nadine who started this questionaire and everyone else who might be interested.

Hi Ileene,

I was looking for information on my great great great grandmother Anna Perina Marchena (born 1803, married to Laurece Piar in 1830) and I came accross this message board.
Your grandfather Antoninus Marchena is my great grandfather!
I am grand son of his son Clovis Jacobus :)

I have the list of ancestors that goes till Anna Perina Marchena (born 1803).
So you see there are two (2) Anna Perina's.

The Anna Perina (born 1864) who married Antoninus Marchena (born 1897) in 1891, is part of 11 sons and daughters of Doloria Piar and Martinus Booi (married in 1857)
Doloria Piar (born 1839) was part of 4 children of Laurens Piar and Anna Perina Marchena (born 1803).

This is as far as my family tree goes (till now).
I am planning to continue researching to see how far back I can go.

It took me a little while but hopefully now i have more time to persue this(our) familly tree.
There are several stories about the origen of the Marchena last name. One the has the name going back to a small village named Marchena in south Spain. Another story tells that Marchena came from the family name "De Marchena".
De Marchena were slave owners and the children they had with slaves could not have the full "De Marchena" last name, so they got only "Marchena". These Mullatos left Curacao to live on Bonaire.
Don't know for sure which one of the stories is true, But im gonna do my best to find out.

Thank you Nadine for posting this. Hope you are doing well, and keep up the search.

Garrick Marchena.

Hallo Jean,
Chris
Geachte heer, mevrouw,

Dear Elvis,
it is a complicated matter. Do you read Dutch? Have a look on the site http://www.bonairefamily.com/vrije/index.htm
The site was compiled before the Curaçao deaths became available on genlias. It is not that people were not allowed to marry. Slaves were not allowed to marry. But free people only could marry in Curaçao before 1823/1828, not everybody from Bonaire was able to do that. You have originally (before 1800) three groups of people on Bonaire. Free white, usually working for the West Indian Company, slaves of the West Indian Company working in the salt flats and a group of free Indian. All three groups mixed with each other and were sometimes very creative in creating names for their offspring. Naming patterns followed the Dutch naming patterns for a long time, even within the slave population sometimes. During the West Indian Company nobody was allowed without permission to live in or move to Bonaire. They could not influence the movements of the free Indian population. If you need more information write me at cmassur@hotmail.com
Chris

It's amazing , your knowledge of the family Marchena.
I would think that you are a family Marchena investigator.
Ok.I wonder where the Marchena's originaly come from. I know
that there has been a mix. There are in one family Marchena
light skinned and indian types. I also know that not all the Marchena's are family because some bought the name or some were misidentified mostly those living in Curacao.
I am from the real Marchena clan. My grandmother was Damiana
Francesca Marchena ( indian type). Her parents where Pieter
Jacobus Marchena and Maria Sablina Marchena.Who were these persons and there history? From my family tree Piar I know the history from Italy and Tenerife on. But I do not know that of Marchena. You told me they where also mulatto. I thought they where mistizo because they did not marry creols in that time. Only very very late 1900 they began to mix.I tried to get historical info of the Marchena family through the internet but I got few or no info. Maybe you know more? The oldest record we have is that of Adriaan Marchena married to Maria Asencion Marchena.
In any case many thanx for your info.
Greetings Elvis

I suspect that Anna Perina was a daughter of Juan Felisiano Marchena and Anna Anthonia. But one cannot be sure. In that case, Maria Martha Marchena would have been her oldest sister? Anna Perina's death is in genlias in 1903, but without naming the parents.
One of the oldest records for free Marchena I found, is a couple Domingo Marchena (free mulatto) and Dionara Marchena, they lived in 1767 in Curaçao. And there is also early on a Daniel Pieterz. Marchena who was married to Jannetje Warnink? Their daughter Anna Dina Marchena was involved with the false golden coins around 1800.
C.
Hallo Elvis,
In the booklet Isla die Papa Cornés priest Nooijen writes that Ma Perina was born in Curaçao and that she died in 1903 almost 100 years old. At her marriage with Piar in 1830 Maria Martha Marchena and Willem Jonker were witnesses, propably family. Perhaps this helps. Also her death should be registered on genlias.nl, but I did not yet look that up.
C. Massur

Hallo Huub,
I just saw the message on the above mentioned names. I am conducting The Surname George family tree research. my father Louis and I, Louis Jr. were born in NYC, USA. I now live in Texas. However, My G/father was Romaldo A. George born in Bonaire in 1889, his father was Pablo Girigorie George born 1855 and his father was Martien Simon George born 1824. Martien's mother was Johanna Frederika George, spouse was a Nicolas de Jongh. G/G/G Grandfather had a sister by the name of Maria Elisabeth George, De Jongh born 1885 in Bonaire. It seems Johanna Frederika George De Jongh was the mother of both my Grandfather Martien and Maria Elisabeth De Jongh. By the way, Martien Simon George was married to Petrona or Petrinia Merced Martijn, whose mother was Maria Aldersina Martijn. More information about the ABC island geneology is available on the Genlias web site for the Netherlands. I can be reached at lgeorge413@yahoo.com. I need more information on who Johanna Frederika George's husband was? Also, Martien, Martin and Martijn are all Dutch uses for the same name. LGJ

I found the birth certificate of your grandfather! And I made a photo of it for you (I attached it to this post).

Your grandfathers name is officially Daniel Douglas Faulkner. Born on 23 june 1902 at 19.30 hours.
His fathers name is Rupert De George Faulkner, 52 years old and captain of a ship.
His mothers name is Chrissie Haslam Sears (without an profession).
Witnesses are Peter Eskildsen 50 years bookkeeper and Arthur Burlington Smith 36 years, machinist.
The first signature on the left is of Rupert.

I also found the mariage certificate of your grandfathers parents (see the other 2 attachments to this post):

Rupert De George Faulkner (52 years, captain of a ship) and Chrissie Haslam Sears (34 years, without a proffession) married on 4 december 1901.
Rupert is born in Hantsport, New Schotland, Canada. He is widower of Lena Faulkner. He is a son of David Weir Faulkner en Hannah Beekwith, both deceased.
Chrissie is born in New York, United States of North America. She is devorced from Francis Emery Jordan. Both living on Curacao.

As you can calculate, Chrissie was almost 2 month pregnant when the married.

Let me know if you could find the attachments (otherwise I will send them to you by mail)

Al the best,

Matthijs
Attachments:

Reply Report Abuse Print
My great-grandfather wasCapt. RupertDe George Faulkner. He and his wife, apparently, went down with his ship the Lockhart on May 30,1906 off the coast of Bonaire. I'm looking for any information regarding survivors as my Great Unce George Faulkner, who was a cild at the time, supposedly survived this shipwreck somehow. Would love to know if there is a newspaper account.
