Classification: Query
Surnames: Pestano, D'Abreu, Fernandes
I'm looking for any information on my Grandfather Dr. Francisco Aniceto Pestano, a doctor of Chiropractic, known as a "Scientific Masseur" in this period. His wife Guilhermena nee D'Abreu, born Georgetown, Demerara, BG. his sons Stanley "Sonny" missing, worked on one of Canada's West Indian Merchant Fleet, the Lady Rodney, he was last hear from via post card from Prince George's Wharf in Nassau, Basil, daughters Margaret Mary and Cecelia "DoDo". Dr. Pestano was born in Georgetown, Demerara b. 17 April 1887. Dr. Pestano took his practice to Trinidad late 1915 to the middle of 1919 as his two daughters were born there in Trinidad, one in 1917 and the other in 1919. We have one address for the birth of Margaret Mary as listed on her birth certificate as Tunapuna District Tacarigua Ward, Macoya Road. I'm assuming that his youngest daughter, Cecelia was born at Macoya Road as well.
I have information on one Dr. F. J. Pester of Henry Street, Port of Spain (1919) as I believe this may have been a misspelling of my Grandfather's name from a passenger ship listing made by his brothers as their contact in Port of Spain? his brother sailed from port-ofSpain in 1919, George and wife Hellen and his other brother John and wife Mary and their 2 year old son.
I also know that following his return to Georgetown in 1919 or 1920, he later took his practice back to the Caribbean Island of Barbados in 1923 and stayed there roughly two years as his daughter, Margaret Mary, my mother, who is still alive at 84 recalls this memory, quite vividly she was 6 at the time. The period in Barbados would have been from 1923 to 1925. They lived at Alpha Cottage in Hastings Christ Church.
From Barbados in 1925 Dr. Pestano sailed to St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Grenada and then Trinidad before returning to Georgetown, Demerara in 1926. He practiced in all of these islands and no doubt would also have advertised his services in each island. I would like to know what newspapers were in circulation between 1925 and 1926 in St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenada.
Someone's grandparents must have told some stories of Dr. Pestano. Please, can anyone shed some light on these Pestanos.
Any information would be helpful and greatly appreciated.
Thank you
