My Great grand father was born in St. Vincent. He was the youngest of a family that immigrated from Madiera ( I think) during the famine in Europe. When things got better, his two surviving sisters returned home.
His name was Joseph Olliverre or Ollivierra.
He lived just outside Kingstown below Sion Hill.

I would also like to get information on the Sayers amd Evans family who are his descendents.

I'm trying to find out about my paternal Grandmother. I know very little about her apart from the fact that she married my grandfather Robert Morrison sometime before 1909. Their son and my uncle, Reginald Joseph Gordon Morrison was born in Antigua on March 29 1909. They left for England shortly after that because my Father John was born in London in 1912. Beyond that I believe that Florence was of Portuguese decent but possibly born in Antigua. I have a photo of her which appears to have been done in New York in 1899 so she could have been living their or visiting relatives. She looks about 20 years old in it. Any help would be appreciated.

I forgot to add a few more details that would aid in identifying my father, Jose Nunes. He was married 3 times - the first was around 1907 to a Gomes, then around 1930 to Ivy Cabral who died in 1940 and finally to my mother, Elva D'Oliveira, who was also from British Guiana. I remember a sister of my father called Nelly Reis who had a grand-daughter called Patsy. Patsy married a Ferreira and immigrated to Canada when her husband died tragically in Guyana around 1959.

I recently had a response from someone in the USA that said she has come across a gentleman who's name was Lounds and that he came from St Catherine in Jamaica. However she has lost contact so anyone with information or knowledge please contact I cannot find any information on Lounds beyond my granfather Johnny Loundes who was born possible as early as 1900 but this date is not precise I am guessing base on my granmothers birth of 1907.

DaCosta/deFreitas/Pistana St. Kitts

These are the names of my great grandparents. I am confused and hope someone can shed some light on the situation for me. I have been told my great grandfather Joaquin Pistana was born in Portugal [probably Madeira) and went to St. Kitts as a young man. He married Louvina DeFreitas in 1889 in Nevis and at that time the records indicate he used the last name Pistana. For the next few years the birth records of his children list his name various ways i.e. Pistana daCosta and sometimes just Pistana. The children were also listed as DaCosta or DaCosta Pistana or just Pistana. Most of the children emmigrated to New York and all always used the last name Pistana. His death record lists his name as Pistana. There are various family stories that his name was DaCosta and he changed it to Pistana. Would anybody have any suggestions why use Pistana sometimes and DaCosta other times? Does this have something to do with his mother's name being DaCosta? Is there some kind of Portuguese tradition? Is Pistana a Portuguese name?

Sears, Sawyer, Soia, Suarez, Sorres, St Kitts

My ancestor John Sears, who was born in St Kitts 22 March 1845, used both Sears and Sawyer on records in New Zealand in the 10 years prior to him drowning. Verbal family history has his mother as Rebecca from Portugal and his grandmother as Lydia Maria. His father is said to be John Sears. He married a Maori woman called Hoana Te Amaru, and spelt her name Johanna on one document.

In an effort to establish the real surname - Sears or Sawyer? or both? I have searched Rootsweb, and Genealogy.com and that has been exhausting over a long period of time...but I have learnt alot.

I learnt that Portuguese and Spanish known as Sears and Sawyer in the colonies were actually anglicised names that were originally Soia, Suarez, Sorres, etc. Johns name may actually be one of these and needs to be explored further.

Although John was born in St Kitts, he may not have been brought up there. It was a very transient society and a gateway to the States, as well as to other British Colonies. Seeing how many people have come to a frustrating halt in looking for ancestors born in St Kitts bears this out...and makes this Portuguese West Indies message board so very exciting!

If anyone has a John, or Rebecca or Lydia Maria - Sears, Sawyer, Soia, Suarez, Sorres who may have been in St Kitts in the 1840s please contact me. Thank you. TeAwhi.

Hey Everyone,

I am researching my family genealogy and am in desperate need of assistance so I came across this thread and I hope that someone out there can offer some help. I am researching my family history in Guyana (then British Guiana) and more specifically my great grandfather Mr. John De La Para who I am told was the first Council Chairman for Wismar/Christianbourg in what was then British Guiana and was responsible for the Bauxite workers in the area from what I gather... I am looking for any information on him as I have been told he may have originally came from the Island of Madeira... I have obtained some additional information from old directories of De La Par(r)a's who may be related to his family which I am going to post just in case someone may have some familarity with the name... thanks in advance and I hope that someone out there can provide any form of advice or assistance...

1872 R. De La Para and was a Manager at Nismes WBD (West Bank Demerara)

1882 R de la Parra, Overseer, Goedverwagting ECD
1882 E de la Parra, Overseer, Windsor Forest WCD

I firmly believe that R De La Para was my great great grandfather but am seeking more information on how I can prove this ... any suggestions would be most helpful ...
Nunes in Guiana

Hi Jennifer. My dad's mother Claudia Nunes (08.07.1898~03.05.1972), married Francis (Borge?) Teixeira (10.10.1894~03.06.1949). She was born in 1898 of Augustus Nunes (18.1.1871~14.9.1928) and (?unknown?). Now I have lots of info on the Teixeira side including a photo of Francis's mother & father (but no names for them). Here are some Nunes names for you to cross reference: Manoel "Manny" b:1878~26.08.1924 and may be a brother of Claudia; Marie Nunes (28.10.1899~09.09.1996); Ursula Nunes (1909~11.09.1938) may be another sister of Claudia - she, Ursula, married one Alex St.Hill; Laurie Nunes? may be an uncle of Claudia; Mary Nunes or Mary 'Moura' Nunes may be Claudia's mother. I have the names of Yvonne & Joan who may be children of Ursula. Have fun and let me know if you find anything. ian_tex@hotmail.com

Joseph (Santos) Fernandes

Does anyone know or is related to Joseph (Santos) Fernandes ? He was born in British Guiana in 1884 and left there around 1918 (or later?) at about 34 years old. He left behind an ex-wife, Beatrice de Souza, and 3 young sons and we have no idea where he went to or what happened to him. It is said he may have gone to the West Indies, the USA, Suriname, Brazil or even Panama. He might be known as Joe Fernandes and had only one sister called Anna Correia. His father was Luis Santos Fernandes (Madeira). I would be glad to hear from anyone who knew him or of him, or are his descendents, if he subsequently remarried.

Ethlyn’s mother was an Ellen Hardy and a Mr McKenzie. Ethlyn’s mother had two further daughters for different men. Louise (father unknown) and Ethyl (father was a Arthur Edwards).
My paternal grandfather was a William Allison b. 1885-1900. He had children by a Lillian Allison. My father, Erick Emmanuel Allison was born in 1921 in Mocho, Clarendon, Jamaica (West Indies). William Allison was a horse trainer who often worked in Cuba/Panama. He had children by another woman besides Lillian Allison. Some of his children may have been born in Cuba/Panama.
Ships from the West Indies to England

I am looking for a ship that an ancestor of mine(John Battis was his name), sailed on from the West Indies to England. I have placed him in Dartmouth, Devon on the 4th August, 1824. He was baptised on this date at Saint Saviour's, Dartmouth, Devon, England. It was an adult baptism and he gave his place of residence as the West Indies. Where do I need to search for his details? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for any help.
Liz Joraslafsky

I am looking for any information on my ancestor(ggggrandfather). His name was John Battis. Apparently he sailed from the West Indies to Plymouth where he was baptised at Saint Saviours Church on August 4, 1824. I am looking for a date of birth as on the baptism certificate he stated that his place of residence was in the West Indies. I am assuming that he would have been at least 18 years of age or thereabouts when he was baptised. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you if you can find anything about him. No idea where he sailed from or what island he was born on or anything.
Liz Joraslafsky.

Elizabeth moved to Cuba prior the Castro Revolution, it's been said she moved to the easter section of Cuba, perhaps a town called Oriente. Also, she may have a son by the name of Julio(this info is a bit unreliable).
