I am looking for a little history of the Sempill family of Caneel Bay. J. R. Sempill and his wife Ann had at least 2 daugthers, Mary Ann and Emily, both born about 1830-ish.
The Sempills and Ruans owned some property together - a sugar plantation, though that might make it sound grander than it was.
In the 1857 Christiansted census, I found the following household:
William Beech, 45 (75?), Dominica, Episcopalian, Married, Atty
Mary H. Beech, 60, St Croix, Epis, Married, home
Jane E. Edden, Antiqua, 42, Episcopal, niece
Ann Sempill, St Croix, 58, Epis, widow
Emily Sempill, St Croix, 25, Epis, unmarried
Charlotte L. Ruan, St Croix, 59, Epis, Unmarried
Mary Ann Carstensen (nee Sempill) St Croix, 27, Epis, widow
In the next house over, but a house also owned by William Beech, Esq, is Rebecca Cooper, age 25, unmarried.
Does anybody know the relationship between the Ruans and Sempills (and William Beech)? I thought they might either be interrelated or possibly go back to the old country, because they owned some property together?
Does anybody know if they are Scots or Danes - or ???
Thanks for any help you might share,
