UDNEY MARIA BLAKELEY von BRETTON was the only daughter of the American naval hero, Capt. Johnston Blakeley. She was born in Boston in 1814. On news of the loss of Capt. Blakeley's ship in the War of 1812 the State of North Carolina "adopted" his infant daughter and sponsored her education and upbringing. Udney Maria came to the Danish West Indies and met Baron Joseph von Bretton, a Danish physician in St. Croix. The couple married in 1841, but the young woman died in childbirth the next year, on March 2, 1842. I am seeking the location of her grave site, which is presumably on St. Croix. Any information would be appreciated.
The North Carolina Museum of Art owns a portrait of Udney Maria Blakeley, age 16, painted by the Philadelphia artist Thomas Sully.
