"I have noticed on a Eurocart map that there is now a village called Kavalar at the, I belive, western shore of Lake Weissensee (about ten miles southwest of Spittal) & would like to find out more about this villages origins, since I believe it was named after our family."

most times familynames can come about the places they lived - not vice versa.
the name Kavalar has slavic (slovenian)orgin and comes about occupation not a place:
slovenian >
kovalo, nakovalo = anvil (Amboß in german)
kovati = forge (schmieden in german)
Kovac = Smith (Schmid in german)
name-variants are Schmied, Schmidt, Kobau, Kovac and so on.

WHERE should this place called Kavalar be?
do you have it on map? never heared for that area.

for ancestors-research ask at diocesan-archive Klagenfurt if they have also the old files for the Kanal-valley, now Italy: http://www.kath-kirche-kaernten.at/dioezese/organisation/C25...
