Krain (Carniola) was a crownland (Kronland) of the Austrian Empire. When the Austrian Empire got dismantled after WW 1, Carniola formed the core part of Slovenia which started out as a republic of the new, soon to be named, Yugoslavia. Today, after the disintegration of Yugoslavia, Slovenia is an independent country.
