Kohler/Kollar from Graz, Austria

I am working on my family tree.

I’ve discovered that my great great grandmother, Anna Bracie’s father was a buergermeister. Anna was born 26 Sep 1860 in Graz, Austria.
Anthony Kohler might have gone by the name of Anton Kollar. He was born 10 May 1861 in Graz, Austria.
Anthony Kohler/Kollar’s parents were Paul Kohler/Kollar and Mary Bratchit.
My family and I believe they were from Graz, Austria. They were Roman Catholics.

Anna and Anton had 7 children, all girls and one boy:
1.	Wilhelmina Kollar/Kohler born 1886 in Austria
2.	Marie Kollar/Kohler born 1887 in Austria
3.	Mathilde Kollar/Kohler born 1891 in Austria
4.	Antonia Kollar/Kohler born 1897 in Austria
5.	Anton Kollar/Kohler born 1898 in Austria (the son and my great grandfather)
6.	Therese J. Kollar born 1901 in Austria
7.	Margaret Rose Kollar/Kohler born 1903 in New York, USA

Of all the children, only Marie was left behind in Germany.

Anna Bracie was on SS Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse ship on 7 Sep 1898 sailing to Ellis Island, New York from Bremen, Germany with 3 of her children, one of them was my great grandfather.

I'd like to know if there are any records on Anna and Anton and their families to confirm their vitals? I'd also like to know more about them, too.

Thanks for any help.
Robin

Re: Baumgärtner - Fehring, Styria

I know the date of birth of his wife, I know the name of all or almost all their children and all the different places they were born, I know that he died sometime between their youngest child's birth in 1883 and my great grandfather's marriage in 1897. I am hoping that in the next few days the church where his wife was baptized in Budapest will be able to give me their marriage date (assuming that they married in that church) and at that point also, his date of birth and the name of his parents as well as confirmation that he was born in Fehring. Given that he worked and lived on cargo boats, it could well be that his father did the same, therefore it is not a given that his family was from Fehring, though there are and were some Baumgärtners in Fehring around that time. It is a pretty common surname in Hungary as well.
I only know that he was apparently born in Fehring because it is mentioned in one of the birth records for his children. The record for the first known child is recorded as Paumgärtner which makes me think that his mother tongue was German and not Hungarian and to non-Germans a "B" sometimes sounds more like a "P" when pronounced by a German-speaker.
I'm pretty certain that I will never be able to find out where and when he died because of his work. He will have been buried where ever he took his last breath, which could be anywhere along the Danube or one of its tributaries.
I have thought about contacting the Archives in Graz but I'd rather wait until I am certain of his birth date and his religion for that matter. His wife was RC, his children (male and female) were RC but that does not guarantee that he was.

Baumgärtner is a rare spelling compared to the much more frequent spelling Baumgartner.

Fehring is in Eastern Steiermark, near the border to Burgenland, which before WW I was part of Hungary. It was easily possible that a man from Fehring married a woman from Hungary, especially after the abolition of bondage/serfdom in 1781.

Do you know the name of his wife? Was this his only marriage? Do you have a copy or extract of their marriage record? Do you know the names and approximate dates and places of birth of their children?

You could write an e-mail to the Diocesan Archive at Graz, in which you ask whether the records of Fehring include birth(s) of Josef Baumgärtner or Baumgartner around 1840.

I am looking for information about an ancestor that was born in Fehring. His name was Josef Baumgärtner. He was born around 1840 (his wife was born in Hungary in 1841). I do not know if he was from Fehring or if his family was passing through when he was born. As an adult he married in Hungary and worked on cargo boats on the Danube mainly. Any information would be appreciated.
Thank-you

Have you collected the family death notices for your Matthaeus Berger? They were published in two (2) of Milwaukee's German language newspapers. There were also notices published in these papers for a Mattäus Berger in 1880, son of Matt. and Kath. Berger.
These are indexed in the collection: "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items", covering 1844-1950. There over 150 Berger entries in the index, including several different entries for a Katharine Berger, one referencing Franz Xaver (1895) found in 2 other local German language papers.

Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping to access our historic German-American culture.

I didn't realize where the name Boreča came from; pine trees... interesting!

It sounds like this village was never actually part of Styria, so I'll be posting any further questions on the Slovenia board.
Re: Families from Graz

Hi Matt,

I too am researching my family in Graz - the Markl/Markel family as well as Weiss. My great great great grandmother was Theresia Weiss. She married Franz Markl a master tailor in Graz in 1807, was born around 1789(I don't know exactly where) and died in 1827 in Graz. Her father was listed as a landschaftlichen kannoniers which literally means landscape gunner - so perhaps was a hunter?
Maybe this helps.

Best,

Rick Markell

I am looking for info about Anton and Mary (Ritter) Pachernigg who lived in St. Paul in the late 1800s. I lose track of them by 1901. Children were Frank & Anthony. I know Anton was born in Graz, Austria. I would like to find out where they lived when they died. Thank you in advance if you have any info to share.

I am also looking for the trelz family. From the census information, they were Kuders and then the name changed to Trelz. If it is the same family (coal miners in KS and then moved to the Detroit area), Yustine was my great grandmother. Please let me know if you have any information that you can share.

Hi,
Thanks for contacting me. I am a friend of Judith Schloegel, daughter of Peter. I have read your message to Judith & she is sure we are talking about the same family. She said Fritz died in South Africa in either the 1980's/1990's. Peter & Fritz's mother had been married before. She had a daughter named Trudy Schmiedtbauer who lives in South Croydon, England. Judith has met her. Trudy never married. Judith also knew of Fritz's daughter saying Fritz had not married the mother. Do you by any chance remember Fritz's mother's first name? Judith doesn't know it.Judith said the father's name was Frantz. Judith was excited by your message. She would like to know if you have any photos of Fritz? Any info on the family will be greatly appreciated. Future messages can be sent to: gsteele1@bigpond.net.au. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards, Joan Steele

Hello, I live in South Africa and for 4 years went out with a Fritz Schloegel from Graz. He was born in 1938, and had a sister named Elizabeth (?) Schmiedtbauer. She had immigrated to South Croydon, England. Fritz had a daughter in Graz. I last saw him in about 1976 in Johannesburg. He never mentioned having a brother, though. Don't know if this is helpful to you.

Thank you. It was from this document that I learned the regions where they were born. I wish they had listed the towns. I was surprised to learn they had married here and not in Switzerland. It was originally hard to find this document as it was listed as Elvis Shifter. It was only once I found out Emma's name that I found this document. I don't know if Emma had any siblings. Good luck in your search:)-Kate

As one of the results of WW 1 that created Slovenia as part of the new Kingdom of SHS, the comitate (county) of Vas lost its southernmost district of Muraszombat. This was the district which included Borháza.

As Mohnbauer already mentioned, about two thirds of the 300 or so inhabitants of Borháza were Roman-catholics, and one third were Lutherans.

The parishes for both religions (and therefore the official recording of vital events till September 1895) were in Felsöpetrocz, formerly Péterhegy. LDS has microfilmed the duplicates of the records of both religions starting in about 1828.

Felsöpetrocz was also a location for civil recording which took over starting on Oct. 1, 1895. I think it is likely that Borháza belonged to this civil recording district. Another candidate town would be Felsölendva.

The entry for the church records of Felsöpetrocz in the LDS library index has an apparent error, because in the second and third line, the two religions are exchanged. Anyway, "carichak" has a good chance to find data on his ancestors via the LDS microfilms.

not sure if it was in austrian "Untersteiermark" = Lower-Styria, the former south part of Styria. this map with most german names that time was named "Übermur-Gebiet"(Upper-Mur-area).think it must be Prekmurje now. it was once also hungarian. think just this northern part of Prekmurje did not belong not to Untersteiermark.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Prekmurje_Republic_EN.svg
http://www.oelm.at/wp-content/uploads/Untersteiermark-JPG.jp...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchy_of_Styria
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bore%C4%8Da
"Im Jahre 1890 wird das Dorf amtlich Borháza bezeichnet und hatte 273 Einwohner, davon bekannten sich 270 als Slowenen und 3 als Deutsche.
Thanks for the reply! The map is great!

I believe Kranyecz is the Hungarian-ized spelling of the surname. I expect it was Kranjec or something similar. Example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mi%C5%A1ko_Kranjec

A family member recently found a WWI Draft Card showing the hometown as "Borhaza". This leads me to believe that it may be present-day Boreča, in the Prekmurje region, as Borhaza was the Hungarian name for this town. Boreča does have a Catholic church, so that fits, and it makes sense that he would speak the same dialect as his wife (from Bodonci).

Was the Prekmurje region part of Styria?

Hi, sorry to bother you again. But there is my question. Do you use a zip code in Graz or else in Austria like we do here in USA. (Example)Juan Rucker
2313 Lee Ave
Garden City, KS 67846
I noticed that (example) Alvin Rucker
8504 Preding (ST), Tobis,23
Is that all I need? The post office here in Garden City will be delivering the letter with the appropriate address and country of destination. Thank you again for all your help.

Thank you for the information. I appreciate your effort on my behalf. Based on the information I have from records in the United States, my ancestors came from CERKNICA or a nearby village called DOLENJA VAS. They came to the United States in the late 1800's and early 1900's. My great-grandfather was LUKAS/LUKOZ JERMAN and his wife was ANNA F. JERMAN. In the United States the spelling became Yerman. Lukas had a son, ANTON, who said that he was born in Cerknica 17 January 1892.

Sincerely,
Dorie Roy

a possibility can be the phonebook to find adresses to write persons with the names:
http://www.herold.at/en/telefonbuch/
take at states Styria and specially district GRAZ but also other districts can often be a possibility. Graz has 22 hits, no idea if you will write a letter and send in copies to all... http://www.herold.at/en/telefonbuch/steiermark/rucker/

maybe you also ask at registry-office in Graz if they give details to the brothers and sisters you found which may have descendants. normally document protection(Privacy Policy) for a longer time in Austria, but maybe they do when you send an attachment at e-mail which proofs the relationship - maybe also send the answer of diocesan-archive. i have no idea if they do and how much it would cost, but make attempt and ask if possible and how much would have to pay if they do. civilrecords started 1938:
http://www.graz.at/cms/beitrag/10017599/313159/

another possibility is to look which parish-church is nearby to the stated birth-adresses, so you can ask also there if they have some more to brothers and sisters for later times. i will look on map if i can find out but takes some time.
N-female dead born in Leonhardstr and Franz michael Bruno in Katzianergasse died in 15,9,1904. Now how can I find information about possible relatives back in Austria? Could you give an idea of what to do next. I know is to much to ask and I thank you again. You were so kind to me and my family. God bless ever.
