Thanks for the info on the book.
My grandfather, Fridilinus was in the embroidery biz when he first immigrated to New Jersey, but found the business going out, also wanted to work for himself. Ordered his own machine from home, but by the time it arrived the Embroidery business was pretty well flat, so he traveled to California found some land. Went back and got my grandmother, and his two children, Fred jr. and my Dad (age2). They lived in Salinas California until 1912 when Grandpa bought land in eastern Oregon and moved his family there. Dad was a farmer and farmed all his life until 1999 when he rented the farm and moved into town to an assisted living place. He's been there for the past 5 years. Still reads history and is keen about most things. Amazing genes, I think!
