Classification: Query
Surnames: Koeppler
Josef Koeppler was born May 5, 1870 at St. Anton von Padua, Graz, Steiermark, Austria and was christened on February 20, 1874 at Mariahilft, Graz, Steiermark, Austria. He married his first wife, Magdelina Krautwaschel, on November 24, 1894 in Veitsch, Crach, Austria. He and his wife first emigrated from Austria to Germany and he became a naturalized German citizen in 1903. He then emigrated from Antwerp, Belgium arriving with his wife and daughter on July 21, 1906 aboard the "Mississippi" (the emigration information is from his petition for naturalization).

I was able to hire a professional genealogist in Austria to do some research for me.
From the marriage record of Josef Koeppler to his first wife Magdalena:

On November 24th 1894 married
Klein Veitsch house 66
Josef Koeppler, factory worker, competent to Turnau, born in Graz Paulusthorgasse house 75 on May 5, 1870, illegitimate son of deceased Maria Koppler from Stubming, community Turnau
25 years of age, unmarried
Magdalena Krautwaschl, dayworker, born in Gollrad parish Mariazell on July 15, 1872 (which btw is an incorrect birth date, she was born July 18th), legitimated daughter of Florian Krautwaschl, miner and Elisabeth nee Schimml, both catholic and still alive in Gollrad house 50
23 years, unmarried

He then was able to trace the birth record of Maria Koppler. The surname had been changed from Koberl to Koppler. From the birth record:

On December 6th, 11:30pm born
Stubming house 40
Maria, baptised at 4PM on the same day legal
father: Bartholomaus Koberl vulgo Weikebauer
mother: Maria Zochling
godfather: Brigitta Neubl vulgo Pittermann, farmer

In his translation to English, he noted that "vulgo" is in the Alps most of the houses have (and still have) an own name, which is not the family name or surname.

The genealogist has been able to trace some of the ancestry from Maria Koberl back to around the late 1500's.

I have been unable over the years to find anyone with pictures of Josef Koeppler or Magdelina Krautwaschel. Do you have any, or know if someone who has pictures that I can get copies from?

I hope this information is of interest to you.
