From what I have been told, the original Dutkevich part of our family came from the Slavic part of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

My great-great grandfather was named Meletius (Melety) Dutkevich. I do not know his patronymic or the name of his wife. He had 11 children. My mother was told that he was a professor of biology and Latin at the University of Warsaw and before that, Vienna, Austria. There were 4 Dutkeviches in the lists at the University of Vienna, but none were Meletius.

I cannot find any trace of his having been a professor, but I did find information about his being a photographer. He had a photographic atelier in pre-revolutionary Warsaw and I found a photographic credit from about 1860 in Vienna.

Everyone in the family seems to have stuck to the Dutkevich/Dutkewich(Дуткевич) spelling.
