If someone changed the name to suit English pronunciation your grandmother's name was probably Braun which would be pronounced almost exactly like "Brown". I do not know if you are in England or the States but in England there are many electrical appliances from the German company "Braun" and most people pronounce it "Brawn" instead of "Brown" which would be the German way. The same with "trauma" which English speakers almost always pronounce "trowmer" it should be "Trawmer" - "au" is pronounced almost like "ow" in German. Hope this helps a bit. P.S. Braun actually means "brown" in English anyway, so in this case a direct translation makes sense.
