Surnames: Bonacic/Bonatich/Bunatach/Bunetiech/Bonitcher/Bonnitcha
Hi, my ancestor, whose name was Nicholas Bonnitcha(Bonacic/Bonatich/Bunatach/Bunetiech/Bonitcher + others - because he could not speak or write english the name was mixed up a lot), stated in his Australian Naturalisation papers that he was born in Ragusa, Austria and his parents were Marcello and Catherine. Nicholas was born 25th December 1834, arrived in Tasmania, Australia via England in 1856. We heard bits and pieces handed down by word of mouth that he ran away from Turkish conscription and that he lived in the hills of Austria just over the border from Italy, he was a mariner and put his home port as Trieste. Any information on the name or the town of Ragusa(which we can not find on any maps, would be gratefully appreciated. We have been in search of his background for over 30 years.
Thank You
Andrew Bonnitcha
