Kotor is an ancient and important seaport and stronghold of the Adriatic and has a colorful history relating to the various fights for its possession after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Kotor came under Byzantine control until 1185. Thereafter it was controlled by Serbia until 1370, by which time the family history had begun to be recorded in the Seamens guild-- one of the most ancient of such guilds.
Then Kotor went to the Hungarian-Croat king, the Venetian, the Genoese (until all of these various little principalities joined to become the modern Italy) With the Turks threatening their eastern borders Kotor requested Venetian protection. This is the way things remained until 1797.
After the fall of Venice, Kotor was thrown into the European political whirlpool and came consecutively under Austrian, Russian, French and again Austrian rule until 1918. Finally it became part of the present day Yugoslavia.
