Leslie

Contrary to popular belief names were NOT changed "when entering the US" Ship manifests were created at the Port of Departure, with info taken from immigrants passports which were obtained in their home country.

This is not to say that errors were not made, as they were. Also modern day transcribers mis-read info on ship manifests and other old documents.

If you notice the 1930 census states they came from Italy, as post WW I some of the western part of Slovenia was under the rule of Italy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Slovenia

The 1930 census lists his immigration year as 1913 and hers as 1920

Name:	Rosalio Bevcic
Arrival Date:	26 Jul 1920
Birth Date:	abt 1900
Birth Location:	Slovakia
Birth Location Other:	senumo
Age:	20
Gender:	Male
Ethnicity/ Nationality:	Slovakian
Port of Departure:	Le Havre
Port of Arrival:	New York, New York
Ship Name:	Lafayette

The above is an example of errors, first the person who created the manifest at the port of departure mistakenly typed "M" in the Gender column and then corrected it by handwriting "F" over it. Then the modern day transcriber did not see the correction and listed her as a male.

Also the person at the port listed her as Slovak, which was a common error. Even today Slovak and Slovene are mistaken on some records.

She lists her next of kin at Semano Istria as her father Johann

Her destination is Thomas, WVA to her brother Jose BEVCIC

Also WVA records show her name as BEVCIC not BEVIC

The Slovenian spelling is BEVČIČ which sounds like bevchich.

And this would appear to be you GGrandfather

n Name:	Johann
Surname:	Grilj
Last Place of Residence:	Lpod Zemen, Austria
Event Date:	07 Oct 1913
Age:	17y
Nationality:	Austria, Slovenian
Departure Port:	Antwerp
Arrival Port:	New York
Gender:	Male
Marital Status:	S
Citizenship Status:
Ship Name:	Vaderland

Lj has a sound like the ll in the word million.

Perhaps the Slovenian phone book online would be of help to you where there are 22 BEVČIČ listed, but none in Dolnji (which means lower) Zemon but some are nearby

http://www.itis.si/iskanje

The phone book is in Slovenian but if you have the Google page translator you can translate to English, otherwise in the box under kdo-kaj type in the surname the click on Nadji, this will take you to another page where you will select Osebe, this will give you a list of names and contact info.

There are 89 listings for GRILJ in the phone book Take a look in Ilirska Bistrica which is a place near Dolnji Zemon

Ilirska Bistrica is the administrative center for several villages inc. Dolnji Zemon

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilirska_Bistrica

http://www.ilirska-bistrica.si/turizem/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolnji_Zemon

Hopefully this will help you in your search. In any case Slovenia is a beautiful country and I hope you enjoy visiting there as much as we have when we included Slovenia in some of our Croatian Heritage tours

Just an aside many Croatians, especially from the Zumberak area which borders Slovenian went to Thomas WVA in the early 1900s, some of those eventually came to Cleveland.

Robert Jerin
Croatian Heritage Museum
Cleveland Ohio

Thank you for your reply. I spoke with my grandmother and she remembers Mary Bozic well. Grandma grew up across the road from the Bozics on Pecks Run. She says that her parents and Mary were friends back in Dolnji Zemon.

Zortha (sp?)(Mary's daughter, who also goes by Mary) and my grandmother still speak on occasion. Small world.

the lastname got in US back his orgin-variant.

you find many variants in slovenian phonebook like Gril, Grilc, Griljec, Grilj, Grill, Grilic and so on. orgin at german word Grill about Grille = cricket
endings -c, -jec, -j, -ic are slovenian forms of the name.
the name Grill is also very usual still in german-lingual countries like Austria, Germany

Dolnij Zemon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolnji_Zemon
http://maps.google.at/maps?hl=de&q=Dolnji+Zemon&bav=...

i´m not sure if belonges to diocese Ljubljana or Koper. the last is not so good, as many churchbooks still in Trieste, Italy because of time of italian ruling and not given back until yet. ask at archive Ljubljana if it belonges to them and give also the dates you have so they can look if have them in their files:
http://www.culture.si/en/Archiepiscopal_Archives_of_Ljubljan...

when did they (he, she) emigrate?
7.) Johann (John) Grilj could maybe be from this place:
http://www.ellisisland.org/search/matchMore.asp?LNM=GRILJ&am...

yes, and phonebook has 2 persons -> Darja and Petra Grilj directly in Dolnji Zemon at same adress.
http://www.itis.si/oseba/GRILJ-DARJA?5872791
http://www.itis.si/oseba/GRILJ-PETRA?5743261
I am from Buckhannon WV and recognize many of the surnames discussed in this post. My great grandparents were John Grilj and Rosa Bevic Grilj. The last name was changed to Grill when entering the US. I believe they were both from Dolnji Zemon before immigrating as teenagers.

I am traveling to Slovenia soon and would love to know if there are still extended relatives in the area or more about the family. I never met my great grandparents but any stories or information would mean so much to my grandmother.

In case it's helpful to your research, there was an Anna Sery (née Schmieder), who died in Aug. 1923 in Milwaukee. Her death notices were published in the local German language newspapers. There are no other Schmieder or Schmider entries listed in "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
For more specific information contact:
Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping to access our historic immigrant culture.

I have relatives from Polland/Germany/Austria. My grandfather was Daniel Lipinski, he was one of 8or 10 children, had a brother Alexander who stayed in Polland, Daniel Lipinski post war migrated to Australia. My cousin who was Alexanders grandaughter is now living in Australia and is quite knowledgable on our families history, and the Lipinski Family Tree. She may know your Lipinski relative connection? I could ask her for you. Regards Pauline (Lipinski) Etheridge

I am looking for information about a Maria Niedrist who married a Bukovnik. In 1979 the family lived in Klagenfurt Austria. I estimate her dob to be between 1910 - 1920. I do not have any additional information. I am looking for any relatives or children of this couple. She is the half sister of my grandmother who came to the US in 1923.

Robert,
You were very helpful earlier this year in a Gorsche/Thomas discussion and why they may have had Ukrainian/Ruthenian listed on the 1920 US census.

Long story short, after a long search I found John Gorsche's home village. Here's the note I got from the priest in Dragatus, Slovenia (as you know, south of Crnomelj, near the Croatian border):
Janez Gorše je rojen 2.09.1843 v vasi Zapudje št.9 župnija Dragatuš. Oče je Janez Gorše, roj, 04.06.1797, mati je Ana Brajdič, roj. 13.12.1807. V Ameriko pa je odšel tudi njegov brat Peter, roj. 23.09.1846
The parents match up with with the names listed on their marriage license (although his mother's name was transcribed as 'Brudick' on the marriage license)
I think the proximity of Zapudje, Dragatus to Gottsche, probably explains the Germanization of the longtime Slovenian name Gorse to Gorsche.
I'm still trying to locate the home village of Barbara Thomas (Tomec) but I suspect it is from the same region.
2 questions:
1) I saw on your post here with comments something along the line that Brajdic's may have come from Croatia by way of Pec, Hungary as a result of the Ottoman's invasions. Could you explain that a little more?
2) I understand there may have been at least 2 villages in Croatia that were settled by Carpatho-Rusyns. Do you think the Bradjec surname may have been present in one of those Carpatho-Rusyn villages?

Thanks in advance for your insight and comments.
Bob M

Hello,

Thank you for the links and education. I hadn't noticed from which board the thread had originated.

Unfortunately I can't confirm Adolf's birthplace. I have very little information on him. The one record I have is his marriage certificate to Elizabeth Steel in 1873 in England. That document only gives his occupation and his father's (Josef) occupation.
According to other family trees his birthplace is listed as either Germany or Austria but I cannot confirm either.

Thank you,
Marianne

According to the information I have accumulated, Josef Rundhammer's parents were Johann Rundhammer and Tressa Pilz.
His first wife, the Maria Deubler you refer to, died 2 September, 1878. In 1892, he married Mary Androsco. Start your search in Manitowoc and Shawano counties in Wisconsin. You will find most of your information there.
Josef Rundhammer was born 17 January, 1841.

Original spelling would be POSAVEC, in this case the C has no diacritical mark over it giving it the sound of TZ or TS as in the word cats.

Correct spelling is Anton, not Antone. This is borne out in the 1930 US census

Name Age
Anton Posavetz 43 arr. US 1910 Serbian
Josephine Posavetz 42 arr US 1906 Serbian
Anthony Posavetz 15
Josephine Posavetz 10
Loreda Posavetz 4
I would doubt they were Serbian. PIRC is a typical Slovenian name and POSAVEC can be Slovenian or Croatian

Anton was from Trgovišče, Slovenia located 79.6 miles ENE of Ljubljana

http://www.mapquest.com/?le=t&q=46.4161%2C16.0961&zo...=

This area was NOT Kustenland, it was part of Krain, but is NOW Slovenia, which is where you will want to post your messages and where you will find records, not Austria.

Josepine may be Josefa or Josefina in Slovenian

I find no record for her arrival in 1909, however the closest match is

First Name: Josefa
Last Name: Pirc
Race: Slovenian
Last Place of Residence: Austria
Date of Arrival: Nov 13, 1906
Age at Arrival: 18y Gender: F Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Kroonland
Port of Departure: Antwerp
Manifest Line Number: 0017
Destination to her sister Marija HRIBAR

Anton filed Naturalization papers in 1926

Robert

Hi Mary Jo,

Josephine Pirc was my great grandmother. She immigrated to the US in 1909. She married Antone Posavetz. They had three children together, Anton, Josephine and Loretta. One of their children, my great uncle, Antone Posavetz is still alive and is in his 90's - he lives in Maspeth Queens. Josephine Pirc lived to be 100 years old! My mother has a lot of old family photographs of the Pircs in Austria. Please feel free to email me.

Meredith99@gmail.com
