It's raining here and I'm a bit bored, so lets see what we can find out about the Salzers on the web:

The city of birth is more probably "Dettingen".

Since it seems likely that John Adam Salzer was Joseph's brother, finding information about him might lead you to the family back in Germany. The biography from La Crosse says that John had an aged brother living in Centralia (Joseph) and a sister living in Freeport, IL.

John Adam Salzer, born 8 Dec 1823 in Dettinger (Dettingen?). Immigrated to US in 1846. He married Wilhelmina Joerris.

Possible immigration for John Adam Salzer, on 18 Jun 1846 in NY aboard the "Mary Phillips" out of Ghent.

1850 Census for Galena City, IL

John Adam Salzer'a burial; with a little biography.

Wilhelmina was the daughter of Gerhard Joerris 1872-1882 in Lacrosse, WI and Anna Catherina Bonert

A genealogy by Ginny Schlit for John Salzer

The John A. Salzer Seed Co history give's his father as "John G. Salzer, a nurseryman and fruit-raiser"

And John Adam Salzers autobiography

Anna Marie Salzer's will

Joseph's grave;

So the only important information from all this is that there were three Salzer siblings, the children of John G. Salzer of Denningen, Germany:
John Adam Salzer (probably Johann Adam Salzer)
Joseph Salzer (probably something like Franz Josef Salzer)
Unnamed sister, living in Freeport, IL

Good luck in your search!
