Thank you Benedikt. Some German immigrants simplified their names after emigrating to the US. For instance, one family in the area dropped their full surname "von Frankenberg-Ludwigsdorf" and just used "Frankenberg". An article in one of the local German-American newspapers was written about a family reunion and detailed some of that familiy's history.
It's not uncommon to find news in the German-American papers about relatives in Germany, or even "Lebewohl!" announcements for both temporary travel and permanent moves back to Germany.
