Stuck! Dead end in Bremen

Hi all,

I've been trying to track down the origin of my 3rd great-grandfather, Leonard Erlinger, in Germany. Leonard left for the United States with his wife, Elizabeth (nee Harmerl or possibly Kahuel), and son John on board the ship "Ocean," which arrived in Baltimore 6 June 1868. Unfortunately Leonard died only six months after arriving in the US, and any documentation he brought with him has since been lost. We know Leonard's parent's names were Joseph and Barbara. We also think that Elizabeth hailed from the Bavaria region in Germany.

From my reading, I understand that many emigration records in Bremen were either destroyed by personnel or lost in a warehouse fire. Thus, I'm at a dead end. Does anyone have any tips for further back-tracking German immigrants leaving Germany from Bremen?

R,

Seth
