There are matches for their names at the Milwaukee Archdiocese cemeteries site: www.cemeteries.org
Use the genealogy button.

There are some Gelhaar spellings there, and most of the entries in "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950) are spelled that way. I don't have any entries for Anton or Anna. Some other surnames linked with Gelhar / Gelhaar include Matthäus Matthaeus Regan Benzing Zwonar.

Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping family researchers find their ancestors among Milwaukee's 99%.

I've been told that he was at one point imprisoned at Auschwitz, but was eventually released. His Father (we believe) is Hermann Adolf August (a beer driver) & his mother is Alaida Catherine Gerdes, but we know no information about them beyond this.

Hedwig's mother was Anastasia Loik and we believe Anastasia's father was Lelagia Loik. It also looks like she may have come over to Germany from Poland.

I understand that Ihlienworth has changed little since the war.

The guy who did records search for me was Klaus Friedrichs. His last known e-mail address was klaus.friedrichs1@nord-com.net I do not recall exactly where he lived, though I may be able to locate the address. He traveled around several towns to gather Offerman & Obrock info. for me. I would suggest a specific list of what you want to accomplish or see, in order to cover as much ground as possible without sidetracking.

"Josef Alois Ament was the son of Josef Ament (1878-1938) and Anna Schug (1878-1951) ..."

In case it's helpful to your research, your family placed death notices for Josef Ament (1878-1938) in the local German newspapers. There are also earlier notices for a Margaret Ament (1913), and these are the only two entries for the surname found in "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
For more specific information contact:
Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping to access our historic German-American culture.

Hello M,

The "Harmon" name does not fit with anyone in my direct line, though that could be a nod to a maternal family. I looked up James Harmon R. in the family line written by Diana Jones Carmack and there is no such name listed.

FYI - The "Redman" name is an anglicized version of the German name Rebermann - Ray'-ber-mon which translates to "Vinyard Worker". Many Germans changed this to Reber/Raber but our clan went with Redman. The Redman name is actually English as there are records of this name back to the 1200s in England.

James H. migrated to OH and then on to MO where he died 1894. Have you encountered my James H in your search of PA German Redman lines?

Josef Alois Ament was the son of Josef Ament (1878-1938) and Anna Schug (1878-1951) from Goggelgereuth and Reckdorf (north of Bamburg). They immigrated to the US in 1907 when Josef Alois was 2 and ultimately settled in Milwaukee, WI. Josef Alois was convicted of a criminal charge on 5/25/1926 (family lore is that he stole a car or horse) and was deported on 12/29/1926 to Bremerhaven. He flew with the Luftwaffe in WWII and ultimately became the harbor master at Bremerhaven. He had 6 siblings in the Milwaukee area and 15 living nieces and nephews (my husband is one). His uncle John and wife Barbara Mueller settled in the Merrill/Wausau WI area

Hi all,

I've been trying to track down the origin of my 3rd great-grandfather, Leonard Erlinger, in Germany. Leonard left for the United States with his wife, Elizabeth (nee Harmerl or possibly Kahuel), and son John on board the ship "Ocean," which arrived in Baltimore 6 June 1868. Unfortunately Leonard died only six months after arriving in the US, and any documentation he brought with him has since been lost. We know Leonard's parent's names were Joseph and Barbara. We also think that Elizabeth hailed from the Bavaria region in Germany.

From my reading, I understand that many emigration records in Bremen were either destroyed by personnel or lost in a warehouse fire. Thus, I'm at a dead end. Does anyone have any tips for further back-tracking German immigrants leaving Germany from Bremen?

R,

Seth

Hi,
My great grand parents, Paul Sikurinec (originally spelled Pawel Szykurynec) and Anna Sikurinec (born Anna Cytryn) emigrated to the US in 1907 from Libuchora (also spelled Libochora and Lybokhora) in what was then the Galicia province of Austria Hungary (after WWI in Poland, after WWII in Ukrainian SSR and now the Ukraine). Their ethnicity was Ukrainian (I've also seen reference to the term "Ruthenian"). Perhaps there is some relationship between your grandfather and the Libochora area of present-day Ukraine. I agree that his presence in Germany in the 1950's may likely stem from displacement due to WWII.

I am looking for any info on a George James who immigrated to North Carolina, USA in the later 1700s. He is 1st found in the 1790 USA census. He probably came from Grossherzogtum, Oldenburg, Germany area. Other families from that area maybe Burger, Oltman, Yeager and Featherkile. George James may have come to the USA via England. He married Elizabeth Osburn (probably English) 1800 in North Carolina.
Alternate spellings could be Jameson, Jamison, Jamieson, Iames, Jaymes.
George James moved to KY and then northwest IL. He died in 1840. He was probably born sometime between 1760 and 1775.

Looking for any information on Alexander Stark (b. ?- d. 1892-1895) or his widow, Frieda Schierbaum Stark (b. 1866 Wildeshausen, Oldenburg, Niedersachsen). They had two children, one was a son, August Stark, b. 1891, and the other child's sex and name are unknown. This child was apparently left behind by his mother when she emigrated from Bremen to the US in November 1895 to work as a housekeeper in Greenwich, Conn. She was apparently told that there was only room for one child so she was forced to make a "Sophie's Choice" and leave one behind. She married my great grandfather Simon Johann shortly after joining his household to work for him. They had seven children together.
