"I am looking for the definition for a birth place which is listed in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Milwaukee City, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin which is given as 'MSCH" ... Looking for the 1877.79 birth of my own John Thank in Milwaukee, Wisconsin."

If he immigrated with his parents or siblings, their death records, church burial records or marriage records may provide a hint to the Mecklenberg town.

It's interesting to note that of the over 100 entries or references for this surname culled from the local German papers, I've only found the spelling "Tank".
