Johan Dewalt was also known as Hans Theobalt Lederman and he came to Phil. PA on the ship Britannic from Mattstall, Germany. Mattstall is a small village in the Alsace region and was given to France after WWII. It is located about 25 miles west of Karlsruhe, Germany and near Wissembough, France. They lived in PA and moved to MD where the youngest son to come from Germany. Nickel(Nicholas-english) and Hans Daniel(preacher) left Maryland with a group of Brethern(Dunkards) at Pipe Creek and came to North Carolina. They settled on the Yadkin river south of Winston-Salem in Rowan County. Daniel later returned to his family in Maryland. Nicholas had a son named Christian, next was Isaac, followed by Rudolph, Marcus was his son and my grandfather, my father is Herman. Most of the family lives within 100 miles of the location and we have Nicholas's and Christian's wills and a copy of Christian's Maryland land deed.
In Sept.2000 I visited Mattstall and Trippsadt, which is south of Kaisersaultern, where Hans Theobald and Anna Maria were married. I feel sure of all our infomation except the spelling of Hans Theobald's name and we think he was a weaver by trade.
