I am aware of these references, but they do not answer the question. How did he spell his name? The first reference originated with Mike Wald. He merely states that the name can be spelled either way. He seems to prefer the one "t" for the name of the firm, but I don't know that he has evidence backing that up. The second two sites just go with the majority. You can find it spelled both ways on genealogy sites. Finding the firms actual advertisements or catalogs would help solve the mystery.
