In my family there is a story about my gg-grandfather having lived in Alsace and fled across the border to Germany and eventualy came to Canada. The story goes, that his surname was Krampien but it was changed to Crampien due to the German taboo in north America at the time.
Has anyone ever come across stories like this? Or people feeing across the border into France? Or even this name in that area? Unfortunately, the records about this story have gone missing over the years and the remaining family members can't remember details anymore. It can be so frustrating!
If anyone has any thoughts, I would be gratefull.
