We used to think we were of French decent however our name was sometimes recorded as Tevault or Tewalt in early (1800-1825) Census and other records. The I found my GreatX4 Grandfathers Family Bible that was a German Bible/Hymnal printed in Frankfurt Germany in 1764! The YDNA project also pointed to German, not French ancestry. I have looked at surnames in Germany and the closest and more common surname found is Dewald. And many of those appear in Western Germany. Tevault and DeVault are pretty much non existent in Germany it appears. Some think our line came from Alsace Lorraine and traveled via Rotterdam to Philadelphia via "the Chance" but that I believe was what a family historian came up with a good many years back. That vessel sailed around 1766 I believe. Lots more but if anyone has any suggestions on any research I can follow up on let me know. The YDNA project so far has 16 members and we learn something new with each project member - glad I did it.
