Does anyone know if it was common for families to move from one location to another during the later 1800s. If it was common, was it generally just within a town or from one town to another? Were Germans allowed to move outside their kingdoms or provinces and was permission needed from someone in a position of authority?
My grandfather was born in Possenhaim, but raised in Apolda Thuringia prior to emmigrating to America.
Any help would be appreciated.
