Dear Jane:
I am Thomas Brabec from Santa Rosa,Ca.This is a response
to yesterdays posting.Like yourself,I had just my dad's
name, birthday and place of birth. These are the three
essentials for seeking information.I have six Czech web
addresses and one advertised research done in Bohemia for
$15.00 an hour. Also, they said the total fee usually runs
from $60.00 to $600.00 depending on effort required. Now,
like most of us $600.00 is quite a bit to put out. So,I sent
them the info on my dad and a check for $100.00 and said
whatever info you gather up to that amount, send it to me
and I'll thank you for it.Well, later, they sent me a letter(
in Czech)telling me that they were searching the archives
in Prague and when they finished they would send me the data. Then,a month ago, they wrote again saying that they
found data back to 1800 and because of the added time
spent,I would have to send them another $115.00.Well,I
thought that was a typical American ripoff. But some friends
convinced me that that was a fair price. So,I sent them the
money and in return they sent me ten pages of data. Each
paragraph was first written in Czech and then translated
into English. This was beginning in the 1800.Now,my good
neighbor purchased data disks from Broderbund Company that
have a tremendous amount of information.Using the info that
I received from Bohemia as a guide, she went back to the year
1610 and the first name on the tree was Waclav Wrybyc. His
second son changed the name to Brabetz,His third son changed
it to Brabec where its been ever since.So.what I am saying,
Jane,is that your not ever going to get much info from the
internet. It is best to pay somebody and you will get more
info and waste less time.If you are willing to pay,let me
know and I'll send you four sources in Bohemia for you to
contact.I know this is long winded but let me add this.I
was born and spent the first twenty years of my life in
that big bustling city of Chicago. In all that time we never
had a Brabec visitor, not one. So,I was very surprised when
I got involved with genealogy to find that there were many
other Brabecs in the Chicago area. How come they didn't
visit us?.We took showers every day.Thats all for now.
God love you and yours.Thomas Brabec--rtbrabec@earthlink.net
