Born in Birnbaum (now Miedzychod) in the Prussian province of Posen. Moved to Munich in 1889. Founded department stores in Berlin in 1900 and 1905. The concern was named after his uncle, Hermann Tietz. In 1934 the firm was renamed "Hertie". Buried at Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee.
