Witam serdecznie. Pod tą datą 07.12.1869r. widnieje - Władysław - rodzice Anton Śniegocki i Anastazja Lewandowska. Chrzest odbył się w kościele parafialnym w Golubiu dn. 12.12.1869r. Chrzestni to Antoni Sobczak i Rozalia Anyszkiewicz z Golubia. Mieszkam w Toruniu, a pochodzę z Golubia, więc to mój ziomek. Pozdrawiam Marian Pniewski Toruń.

Do you know if your great grandparents were married in a Catholic Church? If so, the LDS FHL may have microfilmed the church records. The church records may have the name of her parents as well as the name of the village or area of Poland where she was born.

She may not be on the Ellis Island list because she may have immigrated through another port, such as Boston. Or her name may have been transcribed incorrectly, which is common on the site. Recently, I searched for the name Kucal, could not find it. Fortunately, I knew the name of the ship and the date of it's arrival; I was able to bring up the passenger list and found it had been transcribed as Bucal!

Were there any other Maciaszak in Gary, possibly a brother.

Hello,

I would like to find out more about my great grandmother who was from Bydgoszcz surrounding area. Maybe there is someone out there who can help me locate her birth record?

- She was: Maryanna Maciaszek (Might be Maria)

- She emigrated to America (to Gary, Indiana)- I cant seem to find her on Ellis Island passenger list, that matches to her birthdate according to her death certificate.

- She married Boleslaw Jakubowski in Gary, Indiana on 27 Feb 1916.

- She had 2 children: Kazimier Jakubowski (my grandfather) an Stanislaw Jakubowski.

I found her death certificate which says she was 27
when she died which means she must have been born in 1891. She died 11 November 1919 in Chicago of Spanish flu.

I want to find her birth record from Poland so I can find her family records. No one in my family seems to know about her. Even my granddad only knew was her name.

Can anyone please help me?

Thank you
Paul Lewinski
Maria, thank you for responding to my post. Unfortunately I don't have the information you are looking for. My mother's mother was Sophia Wanda Blongewicz. She died in 1929. I believe her brother was Leon Blongewicz, who actually lived 1/2 mile from where my mother grew up. I believe Robert Blongewicz was Leon's son and Linda his daughter. My husband and I went by the house that Leon & Robert owned and lived in in Pittsburgh after my mother's death (this is when we found out about relatives living nearby). Unfortunately the house had been sold the previous month, possibly by Linda. I have tried very hard to find anything out about my mother's family; there are many secrets on both sides of her family. I do know my grandfather (Franz Wronkowski) was Leon's sponsor when he came to the United States. Franz changed his name to Frank Krause. I didn't know any family names before my mother's death (children don't need to know that). Her surviving sisters only got angry when questioned. Is this the same Blongewicz family that your grandparents lived near? Do you know anything more about them? Is this the correct town in Poland that they came from? Do you know how I could find out more about Sophia and/or her parents? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I ever am able to find anything else out about Linda; I will be glad to share it with you. Thank you again. Kelly Silberger.

Hi Joan. No, the name does not imply residents from Holland. Hollendrie is a form of democratic village government that was brought into use by people from Holland who migrated to Prussia in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was adopted by other ethnic groups who migrated later but the name stuck.

If you are lucky, you will find an index of names written in Roman script or in some cases, written in Roman script next to the Cyrillic version within the document. If not, you will at least have to know what the name looks like in Cyrillic. In either case you can photocopy the relevant documents and puzzle over them later or get someone to translate them for you.

SGGEE has translation aids for Cyrillic at http://sggee.org/research/translation_aids.html

Jerry

An alternate name for Kozki is Smolnik Holendry. I see that you are already a member of SGGEE. You probably already know that there are lots of Tonn from both Kozki and Kozy in the database and that they were there for much of the 19th century. Kozki and Kozy were only a few km apart from each other.

The reason you do not find your individuals in our database is that the records are from the time frame when they were written in Russian Cyrillic. It is more difficult to find volunteers to extract or index those records than it is to do the Polish ones.

Your records will probably be found in the Sompolno Lutheran Parish. If you look at http://sggee.org/research/parishes/church_parishes/Lutherans... you will find that records up to 1884 are microfilmed by the LDS. Click the link to get the details. Records after 1884 are in the Polish Archives. Once you find the birth records, you can search earlier years to find the marriage record of Wilhelm and Ernestine. That should lead to a connection with other family members in our database.

Jerry Frank

Hello Mark,
I see it's been awhile since you last posted this but I see the name Kasprzenski posted and was wondering if you might have info on this family. My Great-grandfather was a Ludwik Kasprzenski and was wondering if there is any connection to your family. Kasprzenski was on my grandfather's birth certificate. His name was Edward Kasprzenski but changed to Kasprzynski then to Kacprzynski which is how my grandfather spelled it later in life. I know Ludwik was born in Poland in the mid to late 1800's. He moved to Pennsylvania early in 1900 had my grandfather then moved back to Poland. Does anything ring any bells with you? Thanks for any info you could shed.
Regards, Bob Tyer Trumbull, CT

A documented 1848 conflict.

I'm not able to offer any 1880-1885 examples. But, perhaps the following lengthy excerpt from the Introduction (written by me) of my 1996 book A Compilation of Births for Select Families from the Baptismal Records of Gora (Znin) Parish, Poznania, Poland, 1853-1881, published [ISBN 1-8871-2415-2] by Historyk Press, Baltimore, MD, will prove of some interest to you, regarding an 1848 incident in the area. ALL text that follows is from the aforementioned Introduction. (Be aware that there's a substantial section, falling within the body of my writing, that quotes from an account penned by a Father Albin Kieramuszeski. It's the section with numerous "..." and "...." editing indications. In my book Fr. Kieramuszeski's text is made obvious via indentation and italics, though I'm not able to use such formatting here.)

Best regards,

Dave Wilson

....Throughout the 19th century, anti-Polish measures were placed into effect at varying times and to differing extents by the Prussian, then German, administrations. Tolerance of the Poles was occasionally the norm. After 1830, however, germanization of language and of the educational system was aggressively pursued. Attempts were intermittently also made to promote subsidized colonization in Poznania by German citizens. All of this was designed not only to stamp out the nationalistic Polish identity but also to demonstrate that the Germans truly were in charge.

During most of the 1840s, though government-sanctioned oppression of Poznania's Polish peasantry was slightly relaxed, conditions for the peasantry nonetheless remained dire and embittering. The majority had already been evicted from their properties and had been badly exploited. The rich were now richer, while many of the poor had lost everything. The biased Prussian land reform laws then in place were held to blame. Additionally, with the heavily promoted, ever-increasing German colonization of ancestral Polish land, the Poles were understandably resentful. Harvests had recently been poor, and hunger and spiralling poverty was rampant. The province was seething with tension.

By this time, there had been a surprising and sweeping change in the attitude of the Polish nobility; it was now openly siding with the peasantry against both the government and the German people.

In mid-March of 1848, unwilling to tolerate their plight any longer, the Polish inhabitants of Poznania lashed out against Prussian domination. A volunteer national army was enlisted, and violent armed clashes began to take place against the German citizens who now made up more than one-third of the province's population. Within two weeks, many Poles had been disarmed, and Prussian forces were retaliating in the most brutal manner.

On October 25, 1848, Gora Parish's pastor, Father Albin Kieramuszeski, penned in the death registry book an account of just one chain of events that had taken place earlier that year only eight miles north of Gora. His report is titled: "For the information of Poles to the last generation."

Father Kieramuszeski begins his account by explaining that, on Sunday, April 24, an incident of civil disobedience occurred when the Polish residents of Slupy..., believing that the Prussian commissioner of Szubin county (the administrative district into which their village fell) was about to arrest their pastor, decided to take action. When the commissioner arrived in Slupy that day, the Polish peasants surrounded him, threatening him with death if their priest was in any way disturbed. At this, the commissioner fled to the nearby manor of the Sadowski family. Throwing himself to the mercy of Stanislaw Sadowski, he was given refuge in the family's home. The crowd of irate Poles eventually dispersed.

Two days later, in apparent reaction to this incident, the Prussian chief of county administration (among whose duties was the maintenance of order) came to Slupy accompanied by several Prussian soldiers, the Prussian county court assessor, and a band of armed German peasants. When it quickly became evident that the local Polish populace outnumbered them, the intruding group retreated. No further incidents occurred on that or the following day.

Father Kieramuszeski's account concludes on the morning of Thursday, April 28. Having decided by that time that decisive control of Slupy must be taken, and a firm lesson taught the Poles, the Prussian authorities acted. Though no explanation is offered for why Stanislaw Sadowski was singled out for punishment, having earlier saved the life of the commissioner, it is clear that he was a known insurrectionist.

....[Mrs. Sadowski] and her sick son [Stanislaw, who had been stricken with fever] were sitting quietly that morning on the sofa when the rustle of sabers was heard in the hall....(T)he doors to the room opened and about ten Prussian hussars entered...rifles and pistols in their hands. The ill Stanislaw...asked...what they wanted, and one hussar, addressing the sick man's mother, pointed at...[Stanislaw] and said, "Is this your son who was in Paris, or is it another?" Mrs. Sadowski got up from the sofa and said [that] this was her son...who...[had been] imprisoned in Berlin [Prussia's capital]....(A)t that, the hussars shouted [in German], "That's who we're looking for; he's the right one!," and cocked their guns and aimed them at him.

The mother threw herself at them with her arms open, standing before the aimed guns, and thus kept several from firing, crying for mercy for her unarmed, ill son....(A)t the same time, several shots were fired from the side, and the sick Sadowski, hit in the arm and shoulder, went into the next room....(T)he hussars followed him [there] and pierced him with six [more] shots. He fell lifeless, and the hussars beat his head with the butts of their guns.

At the mother's cries, the executioners finally stopped abusing the corpse. At the sound of the shots, a few soldiers of the infantry also came into the room and struck the corpse with bayonets....This base, vile Prussian mob [eventually] dispersed, saying, "Now you have your freedom, you damned Polish dog!"....

At the time when the above happened, [the] Prussian court assessor...and his other band guarded the courtyard, so that none of the Poles could hinder the execution of this Prussian justice. There were a great many such crimes in this and the following month....

Father Kieramuszeski's report further indicates that an additional detachment of Prussian soldiers was sent to Slupy that day and that one German on the scene remarked to Mrs. Sadowski that the same fate would befall her younger son, Nepomucen, whenever they found him.

By mid-May of 1848, the Poznania uprising had ended. While the Prussians had clearly won, the Poles nevertheless considered their insurrection to have been a nationalistic victory of sorts; they had fought together for a common cause against the hated enemy. All along, their Church had remained steadfastly on their side, supporting the Poles in their fight against the mostly-Protestant enemy....

My search also started with Wongrovitz and Bongrovitz from some old obituaries. Recently I have found specific records in microfilms from the LDS Family History Center in the parish of Grylewo. One is the marriage of Wilhelmina Dahlke to Christoph Stephan Kuranka (or Kurenke or Koronka - a variety of different spellings). They were from the small village of Nowe and married on 23 Nov 1851.

I don't know if this Dahlke is related to yours. As I scanned the microfilm, there were many Dahlke's listed.

The parents of Christoph Stephen Kuranka were Martin Kuranka and Justine Mitke.

I anyone has a connection, please contact me.

Hello: My name is Harriet Holtz Malamut. I am the granddaughter of Bina (Bertha Holtz) I have been researching the Poznanski family for many years. I just sent an e-mail to Ronnie Figdor at your synagogue regarding your family. I saw the newsletter in which you had sponsored a Shabbat in honor of your family. We have a thread with people from all over the world who are researching our family. If you would like to get in touch with me and/or have an invitation to my tree just contact me by e-mail at hjmalamut@msn.com. Also my cousin (Emily, also a granddaughter of Bertha} has a daughter who lives in Australia. My best to you and your family and I hope to hear from you. Harriet
Hello,

I don't know if you're still interested, but that's what I've found about your family in polish databases:

Caspar Schroeder (sometimes also spelled: Schroder/Schruder) and Justyna Więckowska children:

Cornelia Julianna, born 1854
Carl August, 1856
Christiana Marie, 1858
Bernhard Franz, 1860
Paul Joseph, 1863
Max Franz, 1864
Franz Wilhelm, 1866

Caspar second name was Georg.
Original polish spelling of Paul-Peter’s surname was probably Ratajczyk.
Thank you . I will try. My grandfather and great- grandmother were Catholic but my great-grandfather died relatively young in Poland between 1800-1805 and I have never been able to find his last name on any Polish GenWeb sites. I am wondering now if he may have been Jewish but I don't find the name on JenWeb either.
Yes, you're in the right place. Golub-Dobrzyn is now part of Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship (pl. województwo kujawsko-pomorskie).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golub-Dobrzy%C5%84
My grandfather was born in Dobrzyn, Plock, Russian Empire in 1873. Being before WWI, I've researched it to be Golub-Dobrzyn, the Rypin District, Plock Province, Russian Empire.
Am I in the right place to now continue research? Kujawsko-Pomorskie?
Any help would be so appreciated. I'm so confused.
