I was just curious if anyone on here had any Polish relatives who had to escape Poland/Russia to avoid being drafted into the Russian army around the early 1900's-ish? I was told this is why my great-grandfather came over here so young (probably around 17-23 years of age I am guessing) and changed his name.
I did a little research to see why anyone would need to escape during this time...I was not aware of Russian drafts during this time or why they were so bad that men had to flee out of fear. I found other people's stories of their grandfathers escaping, but I still don't know why. Were Poles treated poorly under the Russian regime? Any information would be great!
