I was just able to make a definite connection that Stefan is a relative. I looked at the second page of the Ellis Island record and realized a lot of my family that came over from Russia were all meeting up with the same cousin in Cohoes, NY. I haven't asked for any records, but I'll have to do that.
Thanks again!

I think I may have cracked it!

THANK YOU so much for your invaluable help!

I am researching the passengers who travelled on Brunel's icomic steamship SS Great Britain from Liverpool to Melbourne in 1852.

On board there were a group of Polish men, some of whom were ex-Army/1848 etc. Many of the surnames are clearly mispells/phonetic, but there are two BIELANSKI brothers ('Cas' and 'Ant') - a recognisable Polish surname. I know that one other Pole from this voyage was released from Prisoner of War camp in Turkey and came to Liverpool, only then did he decide to emigrate to the gold diggings in Australia.

Does this ring ANY sort of bell with anyone? Can anyone with more 'Polish' knowledge than me, give me any useful clues or ideas about where to start searching?

Many thanks

Claire Connor (hicjc@bristol.ac.uk)

Budzisław Kościelny
5th February 1900 - Julian calendar
17th February 1900 - Gregorian calendar
Jan Turkowski and Andrzej Konkol - witnesses
Józef Błaszczak born in Sieganowo (Skulsk parish), living in Orchowo
Jakub Błaszczak and Rozalia Egert - his parents living in Sieganowo
Michalina Torgalska, born and living in Orchowo
Michał Torgalski and Józefa Koczorowska - her parents

Józef Błaszczak was a "подёнщик" - a day laborer, a daysman

I think that Sieganowo should be Sięganowo, a little island on the lake Gopło, opposite to the village Łuszczewo. Legends say that Piast (a progenitor of the first Polish dynasty) has his apiary there.

Thank you so much! On other records , Josef claims to be from "Seiganow" apparently Sygakow in this record. Either way, this town doesn't seem to exist . Do you have any suggestions what it could be? Also, does it list Josef's occupation? Does it state whether the parents are still living at the time of the marriage?

The surnames Rymarowicz and Rozenbajgier are common surnames in the village of Trzesniow ad the surrounding areas in southern Poland. The surname Rozenbajgier is originally of German origin, as Germans and Poles settled in the regions in the late fourteenth century. Rozenbajgier was originally Rosenberg and Rymarowicz was Reimer

Thank you so very much! It is good to know I am on the right track: I have researched at the PGA site before and found that Pregowo Dolne's records are "not available." I did write to the "help" section on that website (I suppose the message went to the Stanislaw that you mention!) several months ago, but no one ever answered me.

From their census and immigration record, I can guess that Julius and Augusta were married in or around 1876; they immigrated to the US March 20, 1884. Rosalie was born in August of 1883 in Prussia, but I have found no actual record of this.

I know Julius' parents (Carl Swidrowski and Florentina Lehr -- AND his grandparents, Andreas Swidrowski and Scharlotte Dorothea Hardtmann), and that Carl and Florentina came over to America to join Julius and Augusta.

But, nothing about Augusta, save for a sister named Paulina Salewski, born c. 1856. And that Augusta had 8 children, but only 4 lived (I only know the names of the 4 living children).

I will perhaps try to contact the PGA one more time. And try the Catholic parish in Pregowo.

As always, I appreciate your help and your interest. I feel like Augusta's story (she died in 1931) has gotten pushed to the background in the family, and I'd like to find out more. Thank you for your kindness in searching!

Meredith

RACKA of ZURAWCE

Hi, I am making enquiries on behalf of a friend who does not have a computer. Her mother was Zofia Racka born 7/11/1924 in Zurawce, Poland according to her 1939 Identity papers. On her marriage certificate from Tasmania Australia dated 9/12/1950 she states her mother's name as Anastasia RACKA (maiden name) no fathers name is given. Any info as to where and how a birth certificate or baptism record for these 2 women could be obtained and other family information would be greatly appreciated. It is believed Zofia had at least 2 sisters. Also it appears she was of the Roman Catholic faith so was probably baptised in the nearest Church and an address for this would be most helpful.
Regards
Chris

My intuition pointed out, that you have put a lot of work in search.
Currently, the administrative center [gmina] and the registry office for Pregowo is in Kolbudy.

For Pomeranian Genealogical Association nobody indexed Pregowo;
http://www.ptg.gda.pl/index.php/certificate/action/main/
By Kolbudy USC [Registry Office], I found surnames Salewski and Swidrowski.

Probably Julius Swidrowski and Augusta Salewski also year of marriage will help in search in parish books;

Ks. Proboszcz Adam Zelewski
Parafia Rzymsko-Katolicka
ul. Koscielna 3
83-050 Pregowo
Poland

See;
http://www.pregowo-parafia.net/

I found no information from which years the parish has a book of records, so please contact Parish or Stanislaw [Stanislaw is living in Gdansk and he was founder for Pomeranian Genealogical Association].

Thank you! Yes, I have census and a few death records from their lives once they immigrated to Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. And I have been trying to use the information on those records (such as birth years) to find out their lives in Poland.

I have had luck with Julius Swidrowksi/Swithers (we are "Swithers" now!), but no luck with Augusta Salewski/Sulewski. She is called "Augusta Selecka" on my great-grandfather's baptismal record; I think this is a misspelling of Salewska.

Thank you so much for taking the time to search and taking an interest! I cannot afford to travel, nor do I have funds for researchers, so any information I gather has to be through the internet and generous help from message boards: I appreciate it!

Seeking Salewski/Sulewski Family in Pregowo Dolne

Hi --

I am looking for information (or how to find information!) about my great great grandmother, Augusta Sulewska/Salewska. She was born in March 1851, probably in Nieder Prangenau (Polish: Pregowo Dolne). I know she had a sister Paulina, who was born approximately 1856.

Augusta married Julius Swidrowski in 1876, and they immigrated to Nanticoke, PA in 1884, with their small daughter Rosalie and with Augusta's sister Paulina Salewska. I unearthed Augusta's death record from Pennsylvania, but unfortunately it has "unknown" for her parents' names and place of birth (besides Germany-Poland, or Prussia). I have a feeling she is buried in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, as that is the church the family went to.

I know Julius was born in Pregowo Dolne, and I can see that there are Salewskis/Sulewskis living in that area, but I cannot find Augusta. I am just assuming that -- to meet and marry -- they would have to have been born in the same or close-by village.

If anyone knows about the Salewski/Sulewski family in Poland (in the Neider Prangenau area), I would love any information.

I would very much appreciate any help you can give. I have reached a dead end with Augusta, and we, the family, would love to know more about her, either from Poland or about her life in Pennsylvania.

Thank you so much!
