I'm looking for info on the Sinkey family. Mathias Cenky brought his family from Austria-Hungary in 1886. My great grandfather, Andrew Michael Sinkey was born in 1880. His baby sister, Maria's baptismal certificate shows that they lived in Klukno. I had been told that he was born in Spisska Nova Ves. The other family surnames are Jenik, Kravick, and Mihalik. I would love to make some family connections.

We are looking for information on Emily Zubnak who was born in 19 September 1884 in Bobro, Czechoslavakia. She moved to the United States and married Joseph Mlinarcik and lived into the late 1970s.

We know her parents' names were Anthony and Theresa Zubnak, but that's about it. We are not even sure where Bobro is.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Is she relative or just a close friend of the family?"

"Also in this letter there is mention of a granddaughter who would have be 30years old on February 5th but died on October 30th. Who is this granddaughter?"

"And Finally in the same letter there is mention of a grandfather Sleziak who died 2years after the above mentioned granddaughter. Who is this grandfather Sleziak?
"Sterpka" from Kez'marok

My paternal grandparents came from Kezmarok (hook on Z), Slovakia around 1920. The family appeared in the 1930 U.S. census as George J. and Elizabeth Sterpka with daughters Mary and Margaret, all born in Slovakia, and other children born in the U.S. However, there is no immigration information for them under the name Sterpka. Ship’s records indicate Elizabeth, Mary and Margaret arrived in the U.S. in 1920 with the names Alzbeta, Marie and Margit Sterpker (note spelling). They were to join their husband/father, whose name was given as Juraj Sterpka.

Unfortunately, I can’t find any immigration records for Juraj Sterpka or Juraj Sterpker, so I assume the real surname was mangled by immigration officials.

It may help that Alzbeta, Marie and Margit were listed as ethnically Slovak but speaking German.

Can anyone suggest what their surname might have been? I’ve tried previous suggestions Sterbak (hook on S and accent on A), Strapka and Stupka with no luck.
Anyone know where Kenjhecs, Austria was?

I've got an ancestor who listed Kenjhecs Austria Hungary as their birth place on their WWII draft registration card. I've been told that the last name is from Austria, (Prakop is the last name) but that he was boarding with/married into a Hungarian family (Bornyek) in PA when he came over to the states (which might explain why he had Austria Hungary on his card..I don't know...). I'm pretty much stuck at this ancestor, and I'm wondering if I might be able to find more out, if I can figure out where this Kenjhecs place is. Does anyone know? I've tried googling it, without much luck. I'm pretty new to the genealogy thing, so I'm not sure where else to look.

If you have any info, please email me at jprakop@gmail.com.

Thank you.

We are looking for information on Katherine Perzel. We know she was born in Slovakia, probably around the town of Fazekaszsaluzsány, on May 1, 1884 and died in Chicago, Illinois in 1962. She was married to John Magicz in the early 1900s and immigrated to the United States around 1905-1910. Her death certificate lists her father as John Perzel. Does anyone have any information on her mother's name or any siblings? Any information is appreciated.

I plan on taking a trip to Prague in Sept. and then the to Zlin and the towns of Raslavice and Janovce in Slovakia. My grand parents George and Maria Estvanik (then named changed to Bednar) were born in Czechoslovakia. Maria's maiden name was Mayernik and was born in Janovce. George was born in Gottwaldov (Zlin), Czechoslovakia. I do not know much else except that George came to the US in 1889 and worked in the coal mines in Illinois. He went back to Czechoslovakia and brought his wife Maria and child Zusana back to the US in 1903 and lived in Streator, Ill and then moved to Williamson, Ill in Madison county. What is the best way to find information in Czechoslovakia? Any help would be appreciated.

Information on Magic/Magicz and Perzel families

We are looking for information on John Louis Magicz/Magic and his wife Katherine (Perzel) Magic/Magicz. We know they came to this country between 1902 and 1910 with their son, John Magicz Jr. The surname was shown as Magicz in early censuses and on John L. Magicz' social security death certificate, but was listed as Magic on other documents and for all other family members descended from this couple. They were listed as arriving from Czechoslovakia, but we assume they were from present day Slovakia since they attended the Holy Rosary Slovak Church in Chicago.

John L. Magicz/Magic was born on 13 Dec 1879 somewhere in Slovakia. His father was listed as Louis Magic on his death certificate. His mother's name is likely incorrect on his death certificate from 1969(which lists his wife's name as his mother's by mistake).

His wife, Katherine, was born sometime in 1884 in Slovakia and her maiden name is listed as Perzel or Perzly on some documents. They were married before immigrating to the US because their son John Jr. was born in Slovakia. We just found out her death date (1962 in Chicago) and are trying to get her death certificate to see if it lists any parents' names or a more specific birth place.

This is all the information we have. Any information would be greatly appreciated. They were Roman Catholic in the US, so we are guessing they were married in a Catholic Church somewhere in Slovakia around 1900, but this is just a guess.

KOSOFSKY/ECSI/RUSNAK

Hi - My name is Margaret. I'm trying to track down the origin of some of my family members. My mother's maiden name is ECSI, and I've tracked that family to Kisber, Hungary, where we still have living relatives. My great grandfather ECSI immigrated to NY in 1906 where he met
and married my great grandmother, Viktoria KOSOFSKY. I'm not sure if that's the correct spelling of her last name, but that's the way she signed it on her marriage license. Her marriage license, immigration papers, and death certificate all say she was born in PODOLIN, which was in Hungary when she was born, but is now in the Szepes region of the Slovak Republic. Her mother's maiden name was Katherine RUSNAK (or some variation of the spelling of both first and last names). Her father's name was John KOSOFSKY. I'm unsure of the origin of the names KOSOFSKY and RUSNAK. Are they Rusyn? Slovak? Ukraine? Romanian? Jewish? What is the best way to track these names and families?

BTW, I also have another surname of MOZODIC which is my great grandfather ECSI's mother's maiden name. What nationality could that be? I'm sure that's not the original spelling of it, either.

Thanks so much for any help.
Margaret
Need help on Immigration info 1919

Hello.

I'm looking for information on my husband's Great Grandmother's immigration. Her name was Mary Masa.

The 1930 census she is listed with her husband and two of her three children in Cook County, Illinois.

The census says that her birthplace (and both her parents) was Czech Slovakia and that she spoke Cech before coming to America. It also says that she immigrated in 1919.

I have her birth date as abt 1901 and I have no parent information. I do know that she had 7 siblings. At this point I don't know who was born before the immigration and who was born after.

Mary Masa b. abt. 1901 Czech Slovakia

Siblings: Joseph Masa, Henry Masa, Agnes Masa, Annie Masa, Rudolph Masa, Frank Masa, and John Masa

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Dovci/Csiszar Genealogy

Am looking for relatives from Slovakia, my grandparents, Andrew Dovci (could also be spelled Dovic, Doci, Dovichi) and grandmother Suzanna Csisar. He is from Bracovce and she is from Jenkovic. He was born in August 1884 and immigrated to Pennsylvania somewhere around 1900 I believe. They were married and parents of 4 boys and 3 girls. Michael was my father and is deceased. None of the relatives are living. They include: Andrew, John, Roland Dovci., and daughters Anne, Susan, and Martha. I have been searching for information on my grandfather's relations for quite some time. I know that his parents were George Dovci and Barbara Csurina. I do not now of any other children. I would like to know if he has brothers and sisters and their names and ages. I have been in touch with relatives from Slovak on my grandmothers side but they have no information on his side of the family. Anyone who could help me will be appreciated. Contact me at JRSG619@aol.com. Thanks ever so much.

I'm looking for any info on my family. Great-grandfather John Kovalchik (born abt.1863) married Mary Vascak. Immigrated to SW Pennsylvania. Mary died abt. 1901-2.
Second wife from "back home" Dora Fesko, born 1881 "Austria". Twenty or so children between the 2 wives.

Also looking for info on Steve Nagy married Esther Katko. Steve died in Europe, Esther remarried, to John Katko. (same surname!) Esther made several trips back and forth to "home" (Austria-Hungary) and PA. She ran boarding house in Fayette Co. to help new immigrants get settled.

All listed are of Slovak/Czech nationality. Any info greatly appreciated on any of the above surnames.
Need Crew Lists 1892-1905

HEllo my name is Jeniffer Baker/Ovatt. I have posted a few threads about my slovak Roots.. I just wanted to update anyone who is helping me research my family line. OVATT. Slovak family.. I found our yesterday that my Great grandfather John Ovat was a Steriage, or crew member on a few ships before he actually seTtled in the US. I have been looking for Ship Crew Lists Between 1890-1906. I know for sure he was settled in the US by 1906. So I believe he worked on the ships a few years until he made enough money to bring his wife Mary gemer/Jamer/Gamel? to the us and settle here. If anyone knows of any links to Crew Members of Ships between 1890-1906. I do not know what year or ship He worked on, but I know that John OVatt/Ovat was his name but Is was spelled european like Janos, or jan, ect. So I dont know the exact spelling.. I just need some help looking for Crew members Records for all Parts of the Eastern and Southern part of the US... Please let me know.. Thanks all you fellow Family Researchers!! Here is a copy of my past threads.. and family info...

(past Threads)

Hello my name is Jeniffer (Ovatt) Baker.. . My family came from the
Slovakia, Austrian Hungarian empire.. We dont have any immigration
information yet. All we know Is that My great great grandparents came
here to america areound 1900-1905. We know that they were supposedly
born in Austria, but everyone I have spoken too from their community in
Brookside, Warrior area of Alabama, they said they always were told they
were SLOVAK?? I need some help with my research I have access to many
websites,including a paid subscription to Ancestry.com, I have been at a
Brick Road with my family for about 4 years... I have found no census
record or any immigration.. I live in California and they lived in
Alabama from 1906 until their deaths.. I know that I have found many
typos in my family last name. OVAT. OVATT. Ovath. ect.. just to let you
know... Oh.. I know all the men in the family were Coal miners in
Kentucky and maybe other unknown states?? My main goal is to fnd
immigration and naturalization for my family... I need all the help I
can get.. have researched every website.. for years and anything you
find is all the information I have put online.. No other Ovatt's
exsist..Or it seems that way....
The Ovat/Ovatt's settled in Republic, Warrior, and Brookside areas of
Jefferson County, Alabama.
John and Mary are Buried at a
Catholic church in Brookside Alabama called St. Micheals.. They are
buried in
the part of the cemetary where the Slovensky familiy is Buried... I know
they had
some close friends of the last name "Harvella" and "Shima" .Maybe if
there are anyone in those families who know anything?
Mlinarcik/Mlynarcik from Slanica

First of all, thanks for the help from everyone on this board as we research my wife's roots in Slovakia. I am now looking for information on a Joseph Mlinarcik, my wife's great-grandfather. His death certificate shows that he was born on March 19, 1880 in Slanica, Slovakia. His parents are listed as Michal Mlinarcik and Fergie Galacek. He later married Emily Zbonak from nearby Bobrov after immigrating to the United States. From what I can find, it looks like the town of Slanica no longer exists because of the formation of a reservoir. Are there any records available for this village?

Sincerely,

Bart Williams

I am looking for any records on Josef (1864-1921) and Justine (Kovarik) (1872-1945) Konecny before they came to America. My family is unsure where they emigrated from in the 1890s, but know it is in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, or Czechoslovakia (depending on the time period). Josef worked on the railroad and the family moved often, but eventually settled in Lansing, New York. Josef and Justine had thirteen children between 1890 and 1917: Agnes, Raymond, Regina, Anna, Mary, Katherine, John, Rose, Elizabeth, Joseph, Steven, Josephine, and Rudolph. The first three? children were born in Europe, and Agnes was the only child to make the journey to America. Any information on their past or places I can look would be very helpful.

Thank you,
Rachael White

I have found that when they were young, it was part of Hungary...so I am not sure if she was talking about when she was young or before they left. I found possible record of HIS father coming to the US in 1903 and his sister coming in 1909. If anyone has information on this branch, please let me know.

DUDAS (sibs Maria/Marie, Stefan/Stephen, Ludwig/Louis), to PA,NY,NJ

Greetings!

I would very much appreciate connecting with anyone with additional knowledge (ancestors, other siblings, origins in Eastern Europe, etc.) concerning the following family (apparent siblings):

[female] DUDAS, born about 1875/76 possibly in/near Hungary area, married F. TERNAN (?, TARMANN?), was residing in Scranton, PA ca 1902

Stefan DUDAS, born about 1877/78, immigrated from Ruttka / Vruitky, Hungary / Czechslavakia / Slovakia to Scranton, PA ca 1902

Maria / Marie DUDAS, born about 1880/81, immigrated from Dresden, Saxony / Germany to Scranton, PA in 1904. Married Frank SCHROPP, born ca 1866 in Germany, ca 1905. They possibly married in/near Manhattan, NY, or in/near Scranton, PA. Were residing in Manhattan, NY in 1910 and Edgewater, Bergen Co., NJ in 1930. Died in about 1939. Was Catholic.

Ludwig / Louis DUDAS, born about 1882/83, immigrated from Funfkirchen [now Pecs, Hungary] to Scranton, PA in 1903.

In 1910, Frank and Mary SCHROPP were residing on West 28th St., Manhattan Ward 20, New York, NY. Frank was 44 (born ca 1866) at his last birthday and was a carpenter in a [illegible] store, his parents were born in Germany. Mary was 30 years old (born ca 1880) and her parents were born in Hungary/Magyar. The couple had been married for 5 years at that time. There was one child, Louis A. (or F.) SCHROPP, then 2 years old.

In the 1930 census Frank and Marie SCHROPP were living on Garden Place, Borough of Edgewater, Bergen Co., NJ. Marie and her parents were described as having been born in Austria. Frank arrived in the US in 1881 (or 1880) and Marie in 1903. No children were residing in their household at that time.

The following are what look like relevant Ellis Island passenger records--these particular records unfortunately did not indicate places/towns of birth:

First Name: Maria
Last Name: DUDAS
Ethnicity: Hungary, German
Last Place of Residence: Dresden [was capital of German Federal Free State of Saxony]
Date of Arrival: Jul 27, 1903
Age at Arrival: 23y Gender: F Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Anchoria
Port of Departure: Glasgow

First Name: Ludwig [aka Louis?]
Last Name: DUDAS
Ethnicity: Hungary, German
Last Place of Residence: Funfkirchen [now Pecs, Hungary, located 105 miles SSW of Budapest, about 10 miles from the Crotaian border.]
Date of Arrival: Jul 27, 1903
Age at Arrival: 21y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Anchoria
Port of Departure: Glasgow

Maria's and Ludwig's destinations were indicated as to a brother, Stefan DUDAS, in Scranton, PA. His Ellis Island arrival appears to have been:

First Name: Stefan
Last Name: DUDAS
Ethnicity: Hungary
Last Place of Residence: Ruttka [aka Vruitky, was in Austria-Hungary, then Czechoslavakia, then Slovakia]
Date of Arrival: Oct 15, 1902
Age at Arrival: 25y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Grosser Kurfurst
Port of Departure: Bremen

Stefan apparently was travelling with an Adolph SAMUEL (surname not very legible, this is my best guess only), age 23...maybe a cousin or friend.
Stefan's destination was indicated as being to a brother-in-law, whose name wasn't very legible but appeared to be something like F. TERNAN [?] of 336 Rebecca Ave., Scranton, PA. So apparently there's another DUDAS sister...

Thanks for any assistance!
Bart
I'm trying to do the impossible from Australia - trace a European family tree....

All I know is that my great-great grandmother was (according to her death certificate) called Marie Bittner Rengatch (nee Marie Bittner Dragonsky). Her father's name was Gottlieb and her mother's name was Sother.

According to family legend she was born in Austria in 1876-77 and married a Russian (Abraham Rengatch). Though with political borders being what they were perhaps she was from Slovakia instead. Dragnsky is not a typical Austrian surname after all.

If anyone knows of any Dragonsky's please let me know!

--looking for information on relatives of Josef Melus, born as the last of 12 children and the only son in 1870 in Solcany or Krnca, married to Maria Nikodem, died 1943 in Vienna, Austria. Maria died 1947 in Vienna. Both left Slovakia - Hungary in 1898 after having trouble with Oldescalchi Family. Josef & Maria Melus had 12 children, one of which was my Vater Michael, born in Solcany 1896. Documents show that Josef Melus was born in Solcany, but the region say, the Melus family comes from Krnca. I speak German, English or Russian. I do not speak or write Slovak but if you reply I will get a translation.

But what about records in more recent times? For example, what about marriages from 1860-1930 or deaths from 1861-1930? Where can I find these records?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Renee

Hello, I'm seeking information regarding parents of maternal greatgrandmother, Pauline Anna KARABA, born June 29, 1882 in Hlohovec, Nitra Co. Bratislavia, Slovakia. I've been told that she came to USA with aunt around 1909. She married John FELLNER in Brownsville, Fayette Co. PA. I have no information regarding names of greatgrandmother's aunt or parents, only a bible record that states father died in 1918 and mother died in 1919. I have photographs of paintings by Michael KARABA that were sent to family here during World War II. They are beautiful and still in family. Have been told Michael's son, Duzy, was conductor of orchestra. Greatgrandmother used to correspond with Helena KARABOVA'.
I believe she was an aunt, possibly Michael KARABA's mother. I would like very much to correspond with family or others doing research on same families. Thank you. Deborah Slater

FUZY, Stephen (born Stephan Istvan Bela Laszlo Fuzy)

This man was born in Eperjes, Saros Megye, Hungary (now Pesov, Saris region, Slovak Republic/Slovakia) on 19 Jul 1886. He was the son of Istvan Adam Ignac Fuzy (First Lieutenant of the Royal Hungarian Army) and Albina Fuzy. Both parents were membrs of the Hungarian Nobility. Stephen immigrated to the U.S. in 1912, and finally settled down in Cleveland, Ohio. While there he published many popular songs, and wrote a great deal more music (including 2 operettas) which is now entirely lost. He was a well known organist, recitalist and piano teacher. It is believed he died in Florida. His only child was a daughter, Gladys Fuzy Harkless Sinay, who died in California.

For more information about this fascinating -- but now practially forgotten -- musical artist, please visit the Stephen Fuzy website at this address:

http:rogerhfisher.googlepages.com/home

Macko, John/Macko Jan (1890-1953)

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone knows any further information on this man who is my great-grandfather. Apparently he was born in Slovakia in 1890 and came (not necessarily born in) from the Kosice city/region (then part of the Kingdom of Hungary, Austro-Hungarian Empire). He came to the USA (Luzerne/Schyulkill Counties, Northeastern Pennsylvania) between 1910-1915, just before WWI broke out in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He had all of his children born in Pennsylvania starting 1915 with John Jr. He died in Luzerne County in 1953. His possible Slovak name is Ján Macko and he spoke Slovak as my grandmother claimed (she used to know Slovak then). He married Veronica Miklos in 1910s. She immigrated to the USA after John did, again before WWI. She was born in 1889 and came from the Kosice city/region, and her possible Slovak name is Veronika Miklos(ová) (with the hacek on the s). She died in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania in 1946.

Thank you for your further infomation if any.

Henckel Family, Leutschau to

My Henckel Family are said to have originally came from Levoca (Leutschau) to Hessen-Darmstadt, Prussia, Germany.
I am trying to figure out the connection to the Henckel von Donnersmarck, noble family originally from Spis, Slovakia (then Zips).
I know they have to be related; just not sure how.
The earliest known ancestor is 1.)Anthonius Henckel, born about 1500 in Hessen-Darmstadt.
His son was 2.)Ludwig Henckel, born Allendorf-Lumda,abt. 1535
3.)Caspar Henckel born 1576, in Allendorf-Lumda, Oberhessen, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany
4.) Matthais Henckel, born abt. 1506 in Allendorf-Lumda, Oberhessen, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany
5.) Herr Georg Henckel, born 1635, Allendorf-Lumda, Oberhessen, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany
6.) Reverend (Lutheran) ANTHONIUS JACOBUS Henckel, born
1668 Mehrenberg, Hessen, Germany
----------------------------------------
Reverend Anthonius Jacobus Henckel imigrated to Philadelphia, PA in 1717.
This line has branched out all over America and probably other place I don't know of.
I am in this lineage, and my grandma who just died, was a Hinkle (they changed the spelling over here in the USA). We know the correct spelling is Henckel.
I am hoping to find out who we are related to over there.
Thank you, Maureen
