LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP - Fabian Markiewicz, 90, died Thursday at the Royal Healthgate Care Center, Trenton. Born in Nacza, Poland (poster's best guess now in Hrodna Voblast), Mr. Markiewicz came to the U.S. in 1951 and was a Trenton area resident since. He retired in 1979 after 15 years employed with the DeLaval Turbine Manufacturing in Hamilton Township and he was previously employed with Kramer Refrigeration. He was a soldier in the Polish Army and during the German September, 1939 campaign, he was taken prisoner. He spent five years as a prisoner of war in a Northern German detention camp. When he was liberated by the British forces, he volunteered and rejoined the Polish Army and served under the British Army command. He was very active in the Polish-American community in Trenton and throughout New Jersey. In 1968, he was selected to be the Grand Marshall of the Trenton contingent in the New York City Pulaski Day parade. Mr. Markiewicz was a dedicated member of the Polish Army Veteran's, Trenton post 81, as well as the OGNIWO organization, the Polish Falcons, Nest 59, and the Trenton Polish-American Democratic Club, where he was honored as their "Man of the Year, 1991". Fabian sang in the St. Hedwig's Men's Choir for over 25 years. Active in Lionism, Mr. Markiewicz was a very involved Lion with the North Trenton Lions Club, where he served as King Lion and was awarded one of Lionism's highest International Foundation awards, the Melvin Jones Fellow, for his dedicated humanitarian service to his community and Polonia. Lastly, he was available in his service during the Polish children's Heart Lift to Deborah, where they received life saving heart surgery. Fabian was instrumental in assisting the Polish families with his translation services, bringing gifts to the children and making daily visits to keep the children's spirits uplifted. Additionally, he was very involved with the Polish doctors, who came to learn and practice heart surgery from the Deborah doctors, returning to Poland with new skills. Son of the late Jan and Franciszka Malkiewicz Markiewicz, husband of the late Pela Majchur Markiewicz, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Halina and Winicjusz Lysik of Brooklyn, NYC, his extended family in Poland and many friends in Trenton. The funeral will be held 8:15 a.m. Tuesday from the Winowicz Funeral Chapel, 865 Brunswick Ave. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Hedwig's Church. Burial will be in St. Hedwig's cemetery, Ewing Township. Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are to be made to OGNIWO for Polish Children, c/o 926 Brunswick Ave., Trenton, NJ 08638.
