Janis, I have just discovered the translation for my grandmother's papers from Grodno. It lists her name as:
Anna Chaiko Smigelsky. It also lists her name as Chaike Genilovna which apparently translates to "daughter of Eugene"? There is also a mention of "Enoch Smigelsky" on the manifest bringing my grandmother back from a visit to her father whose name is listed as "Hirsch." Are Genilovna or Enoch familiar family names?

Emily, I have two S(z)imen S(z)migelski's in my tree. One is the son of my 3rd great grandfather, Icko or Itsko Meerowicz. The other is Szimon, my great grandfather's brother. He was married to Rvika or Reba and did live in "coal" country in PA. I do not have any record of a David related to either of them, but I
cannot be sure.

Regarding Abraham, I have a few, including my dad who changed it to Albert. One lived for about a year. The other two are, Abel or Abraham whose father was Girsch. The other was born in PA in 1910 to Max Ernest Smigelsky.

There may have been another, but I am not aware of any, at this time. Are you certain about his parentage? Do you have a photo of his headstone that shows the inscription? Do you know his mother's name?

Can you let me know the information that shows his dad as Abraham. Maybe I can find something or back into the information.

I have made many S(z)migelski connections and have connected with many cousins in the US as well as Australia. In fact, I have an email that I need to address from someone who was adopted and has no other info other than her biological father may have been named Smigelsky. As I have said in the past, my grandfather was an only child, but his uncles, aunts and cousins were very prolific.

See what you can send to me.......Buildingtrees@gmail.com and I will try to match it with my tree.

If anyone else reads this and has matches to what I have posted, please contact me at my email shown above.

Janis

Janis,
I have been wondering if Simon Smigelski could have been my great-grandfather David Smigelsky's brother. I have information showing Simon was born in 1856 and came to Pennsylvania in about 1883 and operated a dry goods store. David was born in 1861 and came to Penn. in 1882. He had a grocery store. Also, I have found information that David's father's name may have been Abraham.

Please let me know if any of this seems to match your information. Thanks!!
Emily

Thanks so much for your response, Janis! My David Smigelsky's father was Abraham Smigelsky, born in 1840. I don't know his mother's name. I think David had two brothers, Isaac and Simon Smigelsky. I have info on some of his wives and his children (many). Let me know if you'd like to compare family trees!
Emily

Hi Emily,

I have a very large group of Smigelskys. My great grandfather had 8 siblings that I have been able to locate. They, in turn, have a Great many offspring. I have a Frank David Smigelski whose father, Simon was my great uncle. His mother was Reba/Rebecca Karnofsky.

I am not sure how your David would fit in. Who were his parents, siblings, etc. I may well have missed him during my searching. I have cousins in the Hazelton area. One is Ida Smigelski married to Julius Cantor.

Let me know if any of the above is familiar and we can go from there. Like I said, there are many. They were from Grodno, Sulwalki and Bialystok.

Janis

My great-grandfather, David Smigelsky, was born 25 Dec 1861 in Groda/Grodna, Lithuania. He came to the U.S. in 1882. He lived in Hazelton, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and finally Youngstown, Ohio where he raised a large family (he outlived several wives.) He had a shop in Youngstown. Several of his sons changed their last name to Smigel. I'd greatly appreciate any information about possible relatives!!

Thanks, Emily Chardell
Thank you for answering so promptly and especially for the photo. My great grandfather Hirsch was probably born in 1854. I have had contact with other family Szmigelsky and can not find a connection although we all have roots in Grodno. I am also trying to trace a genetic kidney disease which seems to have been passed down on the maternal szmigelsky side. Have you seen any trace of this in your research? The family also had contacts in Suwalki Province. The family name there was Silbersky.

My Smigelsky family came from Grodno early in the 1900s. Father's name was Hirsch. Mother may have been Bertha Seclof (Sokolov?)There was a son, and my grandmother Anna and her sister Sarah. Sarah married a man by the last name of Borer in New Jersey. Anna married Hyman Bergman in Sweden where my mother was born; gave birth to their son Benjamin in Grodno before coming to the US in 1909. Are any of these names familiar? Have you traced your family to this period? I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, yes I have traced back to my 4th great grandparents. I have 2 Hirsh/Hersz Szmigelskis. One does have a spouse and child and they do not match. The Hirsh I have was born in 1878 and he was my 1st cousin 3x removed. His father was Favel and mother was an Epelbaum. ???? The other was Hersz and he was married to a Melnick and had a son, Joseph. These are the non match. I don't this they are the family you are looking for, but if I find a match, I will let you know.

I have attached a Szmigelski family photo from circa 1890. It was a VERY large family and I have not found everyone as I have two other trees that I am actively working on.

Hi, I am also researching family from Grodno and the 1920 census lists a Nichol Matveyuk (at least that is how I interpreted the handwriting) living with my great-grandfather in Baltimore. I know he came to America with a group of people 1912-ish so maybe its possible our families came over together? I also believe I saw a Matveyuk buried at Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Cemetery.

Let me know if you would like more info!

Well the "Powiat" of Grodno, is the "County" of Grodno which is certainly where my Czebotars are from. It would be difficult to see they are not related, just how far back!

As I said, the firstnames are usually an indicator of ancestors, so it would be fair to assume. The name Teofila sounds in keeping with the type of names used in my Czebotars e.g. Fiodor etc.

I may get more of a clue when I get some information back from Poland....so watch this space

Wow, Lots of Information. My Czebotar came over with a cousin as far as we can tell. She was Teofila Czebotar and married Jacob (or Jakob) Buinitzsky (Another name with multiple spellings). Jakob came from Grodno. They were married in that area and came to US before 1904. They then returned to Russia and Jacob came to US in 1908 to his family in Connecticut and then Teofila (or Mary) as she was known here) came back to the US in 1911 with her two daughters - one born in the US in 1904 and one born while they were in Russia. I know that she had at least one brother come to the US also but I don't have the names yet. This is my husband's family and getting information is difficult. The cousin she came with was Makowsky. Don't know if there would be any connection. I know that there was family that stayed behind.

My Grandmother is a Czebotar also from Belarus. specifically, I think her family was from Ogrodniki not far from Baranovichi (as it is now). Here is what I know. The oldest ancestor I know of is Adam Czebotar (born about 1870) and married to Elzbieta Skorochot. They had the following children:
Zinaida/Zina (my grandmother) b.1910
Antoni
Lida
Nadziezda
Aleksander
Fiodor
...my mother thinks that Adam and Elzbieta owned an Inn and that Elzbieta converted from Jewish to marry Adam.
Knowing Polish naming convention, and that my mother knows Adam was from a large family, it is possible to summise that Adam has a brother Aleksander and Antoni.
...also, my mother, although doesn't know it for a fact, has a strong memory of one or more of the "family" leaving Poland and emigrating to the US. Having done much research, I suspect that Adam's brother, Aleksander, is the one BUT (1) its only a suspicion on my mums part and (2) I am summising that Aleksander would have been a brother of Adam's.
I know that all but Zinaida stayed in Belarus post WWII and we are still in touch with that side of the family and trying to get more information.

Am having similar problems with my Czebotar search. My Czebotar's came from the Grodno area also. Could possibly be a connection. I have a Teofila (Mary in USA)Czebotar married Jacob Buinitzky (or Bujnicki or Buiniski or Buinicki, Etc.) came to Pennsylvannia, returned to Russia, and then came to Eastern New York State. Found a Casimir Czebota from Grodno who immigrated in 1898. Also have a Marjanny Czabotarow (Czebotar here) who married an Adolfo Kizielewicz in Archdiocese of Grodrienski, Bialostockie in Poland/Russia. Hard to find information since it is now Belarus and I don't think much is out there. I haven't found much anyway.

Help me find my family: Price/Prus

Hi all,

I'm trying to track down my family and I'm working with limited information. I don't know my biological father, and it's his lineage I'm tracing. Here's what I do know:

Max Price was my paternal great-grandfather. I DO know that he was born in Russia in roughly 1897. I have a record of him living in New York with his wife, Belle (lived in and perhaps was born in Colorado to Russian parents) and his two children, Edwin (b. 1924) and Maylene (b. 1926). He spoke primarily Yiddish with some English. Max's records show that he was considered a US veteran and worked for an army story when he was in his 30s. Edwin went on to marry Marion Janke and the two had my father, Richard Jon Price. Somehow we all wound up again in Colorado.

I THINK it's possible that this family tree is attached to mine, but I can't be sure. http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&db=:18887...

If ANYONE has ANY information about this family at all-- no matter how small, please fill me in. I want to trace my great-grandfather's family as far back as I can.

Thank you SO much!

I am looking for info on my paternal greatgrandfather, Wincenty/ Vincent Czebotar. I have found MANY different versions of the last name (Czabalisc/ Czabatosc/ Czabatore/ Czabatos/ Czabutos). According to 1 record he was born in Grodno, Poland/ Russia on Jan 22, 1888. I believe he came to the US in 1906 and he settled in Syracuse, NY. I am looking for any possible relatives or any suggestions on how to find info on him before he came to the U.S. Thanks and good luck to all!

Immigrants from Navahrudak (Nowogrodek); Hecht/Rasia/Szlosberg families

Hello:

I am looking for information on my son's paternal greatgrandparents' families.

I have found their Passenger Lists which provide the following:

Zawel (Szmul) Hecht of Podlaski, Poland left in 1927 to go to his uncle, Maszko Hecht, in NYC. He left his wife, Leja Hecht and 2 son, Josef and Chaim (my son's grandfather who was known as Hyman). At this time, Leja was in Nowogrodek (present day Navahrudak, Belarus), where she and the two sons were born. They were living with her sister, Pahala(?) Szlosberg, at Micjiewicza 8, Nowogrodek, Poland. The sister's first name is difficult to read because it was typed on the document and became smeared. Leja and her two sons left for NYC to join Zawel in 1929. It is on Leja's passenger list that she spells his name as Szmul.

I have found record of several other Szlosberg's that lived on Micjiewicza from The Nowogrodek Province 1929 Polish Business Directory. I believe they must be connected to Leja's brother-in-law. Their names were listed as:
Slozberg, Bas - grocer
Szlosberg, D - hairdresser
Szlosberg, Fej. - office furniture

It is possible that Leja's maiden name was "Rasia" as Zawel had her listed on his passenger list as Hecht, Leja Rasia.

If anyone knows anything about these families, I would be so grateful to hear from you.

Also, the passenger lists provide the visa numbers and the dates they were issued from Warsaw. If it is possible to get copies of these documents, I would appreciate someone explaining to me how to do this, as they may have additional vital information on them.

Thank you very much.
Eileen Taft
tafte@cfl.rr.com
New Smyrna Beach, FL, USA
