Looking for my father, Hassan Behdjet.

My father, Hassan Behdjet, is/was Cypriot. He was in London, England, in the 1950s. I was born in 1955; my first name is Karen. My father, at that time lived in Islington, London. He was a chef. I have not seen my father since 1960, when I was 5 years old. I do not know if he stayed in England or if he returned to Cyprus.

Does anyone have any information about my father? He would probably be in his 80s, if he is still alive.

Karen.

Re: Cyprus Births, Deaths & Marriages Registry Contact Details

Hi,

First of all I'd suggest getting as many facts, or trails of information you can find about these families and the people in question.

For Cypriots, it is possible to trace further back, some birth, marriage and death records have been better kept than others. The registry of Births and deaths starts circa 1900, some dating back to the 1890s and 1880s or even earlier. The bulk of the registry system dates from 1900 onwards.

Step (1) Find out the date of birth, or possible range of birth years for the person in question and the village, town or city of birth as listed on legal documents, passports etc.

Step (2) If your husband's grandparents migrated to England pre 1960 they would have had a British passport for overseas citizens. The date and place of birth, and name should be furnished to the applicable district registry, via email, phone call or letter outlining your enquiry, and what it is specifically you'd like to know (such as what are the name of their parents on their birth record etc). 95% of passport birth dates have come straight from the village birth registry book, which records the person's name, date of birth, place of birth, and parents' names including mother's maiden name. This helps on the trace backwards.

Step (3) Ask distant relatives, cousins, immediate family members if they can remember where the family lived, what they did occupation wise, did they have any nicknames.

Once you've got a good indication of birth dates, full names, and family members and the village the people were from.

You will most likely need to start searching for church records as you go further back as civil registration didn't really start till the early 1900s in Cyprus.

Hope that helps,

If you need some guidance, or assistance with districts and contacts feel free to message me.

Regards,

Anthony

Surnames PHOTIADES and STAIS

Maria P Stais was born in Limassol in 1906 to Mother Helena. Her siblings were John, Anthony, Sophia, Alex and Christopher. They moved to England - not sure when (or why!). Anthony John Photiades married Maria in London in 1933. He may have been a policeman in Nicosia. Any information about the family or descendants very welcome.

I am researching my husband's family tree and his Mother's parents were born in Cyprus. I really didn't know where to start - this information is so useful and I feel inspired to tackle this part of the tree further now. I am researching Photiades (from Nicosia) and Stais (from Limassol) surnames. Anything you've heard about these families welcome.

Hi tesscawley,

I may be able to help you. Cypriot family history is my main area of expertise.

I can tell you that Chrysanthos Christodoulou's father would have been named Christodoulos. Cypriots followed the patrynomics (taking the father's first name as their surname) naming system for a very long time. Only in the last 40-50 years Cypriots have stuck to a hereditary surname system.

Both Marathovounos and Angastina are in the occupied area of Cyprus, and are in the Famagusta district. The relevant registry to contact for birth and death details is the Birth registry of Famagusta. The staff tend to speak english and I'm sure they will do all they can to assist you if you explain to them you area abroad.

Famagusta District Registration Office
Tel: 357-24801002 or 357-24801002
Fax: 357-24304168
E-mail: dao.famagusta@cytanet.com.au

I must tell you that births registerd pre 1900 are difficult to come across. If Chrysanthos and Eleni died in the 1960s or 1970s and beyond, they would of had a Cypriot identity number which records birth details, father's full name, place of birth, possiblymother's name and maiden surname, and if the death was registered date and place of death.

I hope this helps.

Anthony

I have relatives with the surname Varnava who come from the Famagusta area of Cyprus.
Hi,

If there is a relation it would have to be through one of the brothers as my father's mother was a Symeou. I know here mother's (my Great-Grandmother - married to Symeou - maybe George's brother)name is Frosa. They lived just off the main street up the hill in Peyia. About a block from the vrisi in the town centre. I still have family in the same house.

Have you been to Peyia recently?

Hi, Im in Brisbane.

I would say that one of George Symeou's brothers/sisters is related to me.

Do you know what there wife/husbands names are? If you have that info I could work it out although I would have to speak to some older crew.

As for people I know in Peyia, all their surnames are Symeou although I am related to the Aresti family but do not know them and have had no contact with them.

Neil
I will see what I can find out from my grandmother in the next week. She will be able to tell me more about whether or not Symeos Hadjiyianni was her Grandfather and maybe take your line back further than him.

I also have a cousin in Peyia who may know. I shall call her.

I was there in May 08 for the first time and after the initial shock of the English invasion, it turned out to be an amazing place.

Neil

My husband and I attended a 50th Anniversary Memorial Service in Nicosia in October 2006, to remember the Gordon Highlanders who lost their lives during the Cyrpus "troubles" in the 1950's.

He had contacted David Hardacre who works for the Anglican cathedral in Nicosis (St Paul's). David is a keen recorder of British graves on the island and perhaps he would be able to help if you are still looking for info.

I don't have a telephone number but St Pauls has a web site with an email address.

Hope this is of some help.

I am hoping there is someone on the list who is living in Limassol. I lived there in 1963 to 1966 and have been back once but my old landlord has moved out now, but I spoke to the next door neighbour who was a child when we were there but forgot to get her name and address details. I would like to conatact her to give her some photographs. I have the address of my old house and a picture of it now,but the house the lady lived in was built after we left in 1966 so I am hoping there is some kind soul that will visit the house and get a name and address or even better an email address.

In Hope

Bob Newell

My father was born in Cyrpus, near Larnaca, in 1922.

His father was called George Valaliou Parakras, and was born in Thermi, Mytilini, Lesbos.

His mother was called Patricia Yannis, born in Cyprus.

Both died in Cyprus.

I don't know any details of birth or death sadly.

My father was the youngest son of 9 children.

The only clue I have to age are 2 photos (of each parent) taken when my father left Cyprus in 1939 (he joined the British Army).

My grandfather looks *old* - perhaps in his 70's. That would put his year of birth around 1860-1870.

My grandmother looks about 50, so that's about 1890 for her birth.
Hi Dick, and others following this thread,

There is information about getting the most out of these Rootsweb boards available by clicking on the "Board Help" link that you will find at the bottom of every message board's home page.

You are able to attach files when you post to the board, so if you want to attach a photo of a headstone you may do so. When you are preparing a post to the board, click on the "Attach a file" link that is just above the Post button, then follow the instructions to locate the file on your computer and attach it. When you post, anyone who comes across your post will be able to see the picture.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard
Cyprus Board Admin
--
Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wendyh65/

Charalambous

Hi everyone,

I'm currently trying to find any information on my great grandfather. His name was Thomas Charalambous or Charalambou and lived in the town of Platanistasa, Lefkosia, Cyprus. According to family knowledge he was in his 80s or early 90s when he died sometime between 1956-1959. His wife Maria, was said to have died young sometime in the 1930s, in her early 50s. It is believed her surname was Papageorgiou.

On one particular land record, which he transferred to one of his son's in 1948, his name was noted as Thomas Hadjicharalambous. The prefix Hadji would indicate that at some point he undertook the Christian pilgrimage to Palestine at one stage. From his surname it would appear that Thomas's father was Haralambous or Haralambos.

If anyone knows of any records or how these records can be obtained, please message me back. It would be great to get some accurate information on this family.

I do know that all Thomas's children ended up with his first name, Thomas or Hadjithomas as their surnames. Apparently in the town of Platanistasa, they were known as the Hamboulies.

Hi,

I've been trying to trace down any records of birth or death of my great grandfather George Symeou. George was a ranger for local authorities (according to the family), and was born and lived in the village of Peyia, Pafos. His children, grandchildren and great grandhcildren many of whom still bear his name still live in the Pafos region, particularly Peyia. He was believed to have been in his early 90s when he died in the 1970s. If anyone knows any further details, or knows his family, or have any dates, it would be much appreciated.

Hi everyone,

Below are the contact details for Cyprus' regiteries. They tend to record most, if not nearly all births from around the early 1900s onwards. They also have some deaths recorded, particularly in recent years and some marriages.

From experience, a birth record in Cyprus tends to contain the following;

A birth record in earlier times 1900-even up to the mid to late 1940s contained the following. Name of child, Both parents names, including mother's maiden name, DOB, place of birth, and sometimes even a father's occupation. On birth records in this period children did not tend to have a surname recorded on their birth. According to the patrynomics surname tradition; if a child named Georgios was born to Christodoulos Hadjigeorgiou, the child's full name was thus - Georgios Christodoulou Hadjigeorgiou. In most instances the child would only take on his father's first name as his surname. So in this case Georgios would be known as Georgios Christodoulou. Since their were no established hereditary surnames, many land records of the time state a person's three names according to the registry; "Child's name Father's first name Father's surname."

It may help alot of you, trying to find out actual names of ancestors from registry records, birth dates and even additional information on parents and their births and deaths. My advice is it is probably best to ring them (I have found the Paphos registry to be very helpful in providing birth and death details for free, also many staff speak English)

Here are the relevant BDM contact details for each district of Cyprus;

Nicosia District Office
Tel: +357-22804122
Fax: +357-22665990
E-mail: nicosia.dao@nicda.moi.gov.cy

Larnaca District Office
Tel: +357-24801818
Fax: +357-24304635
E-mail: dao.larnaka@cytanet.com.cy

Limissol District Office
Tel: +357 25806400
Fax: +357 25305288
E-mail: dao.limassol@cytanet.com.cy

Paphos District Office
Tel: +357-26801101
Fax: 357-26306251
E-mail: d.o.paphos@cytanet.com.au

Famagusta District Office
Tel: 357-24801002
Fax: 357-24304168
E-mail: dao.famagusta@cytanet.com.au

Kyrenia District Office
Tel: 357-22867620, 867784
Fax: 357-22867755

Hope it helps!

Regards,

Anthony
Hi Andrew,

I may be able to help you.

If your father was born near Larnaka in 1922, his birth would be recorded in the Larnaka Dictrict Births, Death and Marriages registry.

If you give them a call (which is probably the best option) and ask them to search for your father's birth registration, and also his siblings, it will help to uncover more about your family. The birth record will have your father's parents listed, and possibly may even have the birth and death dates of your grandparents.

Was your father from Larnaka town or a village near Larnaka? If so, what was the village name?

Here are the details for the registry:

Larnaca District Office
Tel: +357-24801818
Fax: +357-24304635
E-mail: dao.larnaca@cytanet.com.cy
Hi,

No I haven't been to Peyia. I'm one of George Symeou's youngest great grandchildren (born 1989).

My line is through;

Me (Anthony Georgiou) -> John Georgiou (b. 1955) -> Neophytos Georgiou (b. 1921) -> George Symeou (b. 1888) -> Symeos Hadjiyianni (b.c. 1845).

They should all be descended most likely through Symeos Hadjiyianni.

Perhaps your father remembers his great uncles and aunties.

Kind Regards,

Anthony

Thanks.

I'm gonna have to get over there as my grandfathers brothers and sisters are largely all still alive. Unfortunately don't know as much from here, because my grandfather passed away in 1995.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Anthony

Hi,

Unfortunately I don't have their wife's or husband's names. But I'm sure some of the older family members would know who they're related through.

Let me know which Symeou you're related through and how.

Regards,

Anthony
