My paternal great-grandmother's name was Diamonto Douvros from Geraki, Greece (in Sparta). She had three brothers who were in Lancaster, PA and Nashville, TN. I visited Geraki and have copies of the Greek census records. They came to the US from 1890-1900. One of the brothers came in the early 1900s. This was my dad's maternal grandmother's side.
Also, my grandfather's brothers came over from Ellis Island with the Roumeliotis. This is also my paternal side but his fathers. They probably knew each other. "Rum" was the name for Greeks in the Ottoman Empire. Greeks belonged to the Millet-i-Rum or Greek Millet (group) for taxation purposes. They were either Christian, Muslim, or Jewish.
