Thank you Arie. Anything you find out would be helpful. My mother and her siblings except for one with Alzhiemers have passed on. If we find there is a connection, it would be exciting. My grandmother married Isaac Isaacs who was born in Shanghai. It was an arranged marriage and they lived in Shanghai before settling in Manila. Let me know if you need any other names. I live in the foothills just east of Sacramento in Shingle Springs.

My name is Arie Mann and I live in San Francisco, California.
Rachel Goldenberg's first child, Rosa, was born in 1900.
It could be possible that Polly had a sister named Rachel who was many years older than her, or, it could be that Polly's father and Rachel Goldenberg were siblings. Perhaps Leon Goldenberg was Poly's father or Grandfather. Perhaps Leon Goldenberg had a brother that he worked with and they both tailored for the king? I'll try to find more information from Rosa's daughter in France, maybe she might know something.

There is a good chance there is a relation here as our stories are too similar to be just chance. My maternal grandmother was Polly Goldenberg and her father was Leon Goldenburg from Romania. She always said her father (grandfather?) was a tailor to the king of Romania. She was born in Alexandria Egypt in 1900. I believe she had a sister named Rachel. I'll need to look that up. Polly I think was short for Pauline. Her mother's name was Fanny but I don't know if that was a nickname. We have never had contact with any of her siblings as we did not know where they were or all thier married names. have you done any more research? What is your name and what part of the country do uyou live in?

My grandfather was Leon Mann born in Egypt in 1906, His father was Mourad Mann and his mother was Rachel Goldenberg (a dress maker, fashion designer or tailor, not sure). Mourad Mann was born in Lebanon and Rachel Goldenberg was from Alexandria, Egypt. Her father was Leon Goldenberg from Romania, and I don't know much about him other than he was a tailor for the king and that there is a photo of him in a museum or palace in Turkey (not sure where or if it's true). Rachel Goldenberg and Mourad (Marco) Mann had 7 children, Rosa, Claire, Clémentine (Tina), Fortunée, Benjamin, Isaac and Léon (my grandfather). Mourad and Rachel moved to Beirut, Lebanon and later, they divorced and Rachel moved back to Alexandria, Egypt with her youngest daughter Clémentine. I wish I knew more about the family so I could link the Goldenberg family to the Mann family tree.

Mathilda (Tillie) Herschovitz - or maybe Silver(man)?

My great-great grandmother, Matilda (Tillie), immigrated from Bucharest somewhere between her birth (1901) and her daughter's birth (1923). She was very secretive about her life in Romania (she died in 1959, and I was born in 1996, so I never even came close to getting the chance to talk to her) so nobody knows anything, not even her last name. There are rumors circulating within our family that her last name was Herschovitz, but I've also heard Silver and Silverman. Her mother's name was possibly Sarah, and she had a brother, Phillip Frank, and a sister, Fanny (Hirsch). Fanny, Tillie, and my great-grandmother all lived in Chicago, but Phillip Frank possibly died in Philadelphia. There's also a rumor that Tillie was a twin, but her twin died in Romania, possibly sometime during the 1920s. We are a Jewish family too, if that helps at all. Tillie married a man named David Weiner, but the father's name on my great-grandmother's birth certificate was Frank Herschovitz. (I believe she may have used her brother's name to avoid putting down the real father's name, but I'm not positive in that fact. There's yet another rumor - do you see a pattern here? - that Tillie's first husband died in Romania before they left for the US.)

Any help would be SO greatly appreciated. I can provide more info upon request!

Translation and Research Help Needed

I've attached seven documents. I was wondering if someone could translate the first 4 for me. It looks to be a military book from my great grandfather Joseph Ostand when he was in Romania. I tried to translate it myself on Google but I am not doing so well. It says on the first page that his name is Ostand Iosub. I'm assuming his first name is Iosub (Josef) and surname is Ostand. That is the surname that got passed down in the U.S. I've found all the documents/information for when he was in the U.S. (even though the name was misspelled on many census records) but I can't seem to find anything on his life in Romania (birth records, marriage records, parent's/sibling's names.) If anyone has access to these records I would greatly appreciate it. It looks like his father's name was David from the district Iflov. I've checked jewishgen and familysearch but can't seem to find anything there either. Would love to know his siblings names too. On the border crossing it says that he was going to meet up with his brother in law Isaac Goldstein. I’m not sure if this is his sister’s husband or his wife’s sister’s husband. Also any information on his wife, my great grandmother, Pearl Schwartz pertaining to her life in Romania would be greatly appreciated. Her parents names were Samuel and Sara. Thanks for any help provided! Sunny :)

Pauline Erber Weintraub was my fathers sister. She married Adolph (Big Chubby) Weintraub. They had a son Adolph (Chubby Jr) and the family was in Mayfield, Kentucky about 30 years ago. If my memory is correct the Senior Weintraub's are buried in Oakland in Little Rock. joe_erber@hotmail.com

My grandmother's name was yetta schwartz hellman, and she emigrated here from Romania around 1915. Schwartz is her maiden name. I am told that she has a cousin who lives in New york named Sarah Posner, their mothers were sisters. I am interested in knowing what ever became of relatives from Romania after the war. My grandmother Yetta had three sister, whose names were Ruchel, Frances ( or faigie), and Rosie. Those three sisters unfortunately went from Romania to concentration camps, but then managed to emigrate to Israel. They had children and raised big families there. I am still trying to know the name of the town she was born in, my uncle tells me its outside bucharest and called "michelen" and I looked that up, to my knowledge there is no such town in Romania. They said it was right on the coast of the black sea, facing russia. If anyone knows the name of even knows my grandmother, please respond! Thanks Randi

I am also looking for family.

My Great Grandmother appears to have been Cristina Argylean

She wrote very often home to Valarie Resadean Detroit Michigan, and Teodor Ardelean in Nadlac, Arad County Romania. Teodor passed away based upon a picture in 1985.

Cristina immigrated in 1912 with her daughter Zena. Her husband John Immigrated in 1908.

I believe they were shoe makers, but also owned a shop in Dearborn. They settled near St. Alphonse Church in Dearborn Michigan.

daveruss@gmail.com

This is a long shot but... I am looking for info about my great grandfather John Lochan, born 1892 in Botosani, Romania (Austria). I believe he immigrated to the US, Detroit @1913, and I know he died shortly after in 1916, possibly came to US via Canada with his wife Caterine Muntean and son Charles. After his death Catherine married Paul Poroch, who according to family stories, also traveled with them from Romania to N. America.

Most of this info comes from John's death certificate which is really the only documentation I've been able to find other than his tombstone. It's possible he came to US via Bucharest. There are contradictory family stories.
