My great grandmother Belle (Beila) Rubin and children, Samuel and Sima, immigrated to Philadelphia in 1926 from Focsani. Her other children also immigrated to Philadelphia: Benjamin in 1913, Bernard (?Burech) in 1921, Sherman (?Sabesc) and Shirley (?Soli) in 1923. I believe her husband Zelik died sometime between 1913 and 1923. Does anyone have any information on or recognize these Rubin family members?

My grandfather, Moishe Goldberg, left Foscani in 1905 and immigrated to Philadelphia. He left a wife and four children who followed him three years later. Does anyone have any information on this family? Might have been Goldberger or Goldenberg.

Hello,

I have both Marcus and Weiselberg names in my family tree. Here's the info:

Caroline Marcus married Jacob Farber, (I do not have birth/death dates or locations) and had the children:
Caroline Farber
Josef Farber
Rose Farber
Marcus (Max)Farber
Anna Farber
Simon Farber
Amelie Farber
Sigmund Farber

Marcus Farber, b. 1860 in Lanzany, Lezany or Laczany, married Mary Schanzer, b. about 1863 in Lysowa. They immigrated to Buffalo, New York in about 1907.

Marcus and Mary had the children:
Solomon Farber
Oscar Farber
Josef Farber
Natalia "Nettie" Farber
Eva Farber
Charles Farber

Natalia "Nettie" Farber married Harold Weiselberg, and they had the children Solomon Weiselberg and Harold Weiselberg.

If this sounds like your family, I'll be happy to trade info.

He immigrated to canada around 1920. i believe he had a brother by the name of Bill or William. I also believe he had a cousin with whom he came to canada with.
Hello, I don't know if this will help you, but the easiest way
to locate family is to contact the mayor's office in the town in which you were born in. Another way, is to find a Romanian
Culture Center in your area now, explain the situation and they may be able to help.

Do you perhaps mean "Heltau"? Of course, there is no "Transylvania" anymore (everything that used to be in Transylvania is now Romania).

Who is is that you are looking for from this locality (and in what time-frame?)

Beth Long

If there are Jewish records of Focsani available, they should be in the Vrancea branch of the Romanian National Archives (which is in Focsani).

As a researcher, I would recommend Janos Kocs, who I know personally. He lives in Sepsiszentgyorgy, and his e-mail is kocs@rdsbv.ro

Janos will be able to call the archive to see what is there before making a trip.

Beth

It would help if you could specify how far the previous researcher did get; did she find something in the records of Focsani in the Vrancea Archive which led her to Bucharest?

I'm not sure why these records would have to come from Bucharest rather than Focsani...

I'm asking because there seem to be quite a few people researching Focsani, and it might be helpful to others to know what the research obstacles are.

Beth
It's unfortunate that you had a bad experience...

It's sometimes difficult to mesh expectations of client and researcher, despite everyone's best intentions.

And it can be really difficult to set a fair price for the research, since there is not always a direct relationship between time spent and "results" produced.

The only thing I could maybe recommend is to consult the Romanian Consulate; some people seem to have had luck obtaining documents from them (especially if it's just one or two things and the names and approximate dates are known).

Best of Luck,

Beth

I'm very new to this web site, so I'm not exactly sure how it works. However, I'm having difficulty finding a geneaology web site online that does not charge anything to search for documents.

I don't know much of my history, but it is certain that some of my family came from Romania probably in the late 1800s. The surname is Agatstein, but the name was probably changed when it came to New York (through Ellis Island, most probably). I'm not expecting a miracle, but if anyone is familiar with this name, it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Nice chatting with you Beth.
My problems had nothing to do with the job, as I understand it.
Ms Szylagyi was apparently having personal problems and could not continue. But she did not tell me this- it came from the person who originally recommended her when I expressed frustration (after one year) that she was not responding to my emails. She would go several months without giving me an update, then she stopped corresponding completely, so I asked for his help.
Had she explained that she was unable to complete the project I would have understood; instead she presented a wall of silence and left me hanging. Quite unprofessional.
Anyway, by hook or by crook, I shall obtain the Bucharest documents.
Thanks for your thoughts on the subject.
CB Weisbrot

Beth,
Two family memebers = 2 locales.
I needed 2 documents (with translations) from Focsani and 2 documents from Bucharest as well.
I hired one researcher, Izabella Szilagyi, to do that.
She sent me the documents I requested from Focsani and I had to have someone else translate them for me because she did not complete the job and left me hanging.
She did not get synagogue records and I did not ask her to.
It took about a year and I was informed that it was extremely difficult for researchers to obtain documents due to the whims of civil servants. Whether or not this is true I cannot say.
The second half of the task was to obtain 2 documents (with translations) from Bucharest as well.
I still need them.
When I have more money to spend on research, I wanted to have follow-up work done in both places at a future date.
As I stated, I contacted Mr Kocs several months ago, but he was not interested.

I sent him an email outlining my needs.
Several weeks later he replied by saying he could not help me.
Since I needed only 2 documents from Bucharest (with translations) I asked if:
1) was my job too small? or 2) was it geographically out of his area?
He did not respond. Obviously he has no interest.
Therefore I do not think he is the answer to my problem.
But thank you for the thought.
I shall continue my quest to locate a reliable researcher.
CB

Hello,
I'm afraid I don't know anything about your specific family name, but it seemed from this posting that perhaps you're new to searching. There are some good websites for searching Jewish roots. They are:
www.Jewishgen, Inc.
www. Romanianjewish.org
www.Neveklarsfeld.org
www.Yad Vashem
I recommend Jewishgen first as it has country specific, and name specific searching, plus shtetl searching(for town names) and it's fairly fast.
Romanianjewish has some names searching, but it is limited to just a few towns.
Neveklarsfeld has names searching, and quite alot for the old Austro-Hungarian areas, which includes Transylvania and Maramaros. This site is very slow. But I was able to find one missing relative here. Information, especially from the Transylvanian region is very hard to come by.
Yad Vashem just started a searchable site last week. It's also rather slow, and I 've found it will block you out after a time.
Perhaps you're already aware of these site, if not, they may help. Good Luck, Nancy

Looking for family members of Ardelyan (originally spelled Ardelean) and Ciric (sp?) (sounds like Chee-ich, maybe also spelled Chirich). My paternal grandfather was Rada "Ralph" Ardelyan (born 1898) and he married Melania "Molly" Ciric (born 1912). Ralph's parents were Milan Ardelean and Milita Filipo and Molly's parents were Jasa Ciric and Sida Nicolich (sp?). Ralph and Molly are originally from Bechker and Ketfel regions of Timis (?) before moving to the U.S. sometime in the early 1930's. He became a barber in Detroit. Ralph and Molly had six children; John, Walter, Michael, Zora, Mitzi and Ruth. I have pictures of relatives from the 1960's; the names appear to be Zivko Ciric, Zivko Milanov and Mika Pajkina. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
