Then given that in English the German Winza sounds like veentsa it might better be Vinica than, say, Vinje. SO, how do you pronounce Vinje (for an English speaker)? :)

I found an AWESOME reference for German names for places all over Slovenia and Croatia, unfortunately neither Winza nor Vinica is named. But it might help others quite a bit, when you consider in the days of Austro-Hungary it was the German version of the name that ruled, and again, many others had to go through German listmasters writing down the names.

....I DID just find a census that tells me my great-grandmother DID emigrate this same year, 1889 -- not the year I earlier thought! :) Goes a lot farther towards confirming this record, but of course, not yet proven.
