Tom, thanks so much!! I believe I am getting to the right area at last, too. There is an emigration record for a woman I think is my great grandmother Mary Sutey: the German listmaster in Hamburg wrote down "Marie Sute" from "Winza". I have searched ALL the Hamburg records, and only this one time (for Marie Sute and Anna Malic" is "Winza" used for "Vinica". All the other times it is used for a place called Winza in Russia, but I know that isn't right.
My great-grandfather's nephew definitely came from Kot, near Vinica. But there is only one document that says where my great-grandfather George Horvat is from, it says "Verutza". But NOW I think the mining company, maybe, was copying the name "Vinica" and they THOUGHT it said Verutza!
TOM. . .You are the first person I have "met" from Vinica! There are people on the "Slovenian Genealogy" Facebook page who are really helpful, but they don't know the area.
TOM and ALENKA maybe you both can help:
I must contact the priest in Vinica for records. . .But will I have to contact a different priest for Kot, and maybe another if I think Severin is a possible family place?
And will you tell me what you think of the places in the attached documents? Thank you so very much - Gabriella
PS - this document says Georg Horvat was born in 1868, but his Death Certificate says he is born March 23, 1867. I don't know which one is correct.
