Hello Maria.

???

I think you are probably looking for Jan, Janos or Johann (anglicized to John), emigrating from Hungary. What we know for sure is given name starts w/letter J.

Use following site & try finding immigration documentation for him and hopefully his EXACT place of origin. Once we have a specific place name, we can take your research to Eastern Europe. Carpatho Rus today could be Ukraine, could be Slovakia, etc.

When you access following link, submit the surname the priest used in LAST NAME - SOUNDS LIKE. In ETHNICITY SECTION click off Hungarian, Polish and Ruthenian. Then click SEARCH. It might take a few minutes depending on your download speed, because you are submitting a soundex-sounds like search. Don't put anything else in. The more general your search, the bigger your net will be. Keep in mind that the details are in the ship manifest and it would be wise to sign on as member (free) at Ellis Island (http://www.ellisisland.org/) before proceeding to Steve Morse link. You need to view the handwritten 2 page manifest. Use available zoom to take a closer look.

If he settled in PA, additionally do same w/Baltimore and Philadelphia entry ports on Steve Morse link.

If you run into a problem, let me know.
