Shane,

The records from Litowiez are kept in 2 different institutions.

1. The easiest to access is the State Archives of Volyn Province in the city of Lutsk but there is not much there.
As far as I understand, your family was Ukrainian and Orthodox?
The Orthodox metric records available in Lutsk:
- birth/marriage/death: 1841, 1848, 1861-1864. That's it, unfortunately

2. The records which are not older than 75 years are regularly kept in the CROs - Civil Registration Offices and they are protected by the law of privacy of information. It often happens that 1 file (1 book) contains records which are not older than 75 years and those which are older. That is why they are often passed to the archives later. The CRO which should keep records on Lytovezh is in the town of Ivanychi - the center of the region.
..............Yes, it has just been confirmed that some of Lytovezh Orthodox metric records are really there but I am not able to specify the years they date to at this stage.

As far as I see, there are no Bytsiuks living in Lytovezh nowadays. My friend who originates from Lytovezh says he has not heard of any Bytsiuks but it is worth doing more digging there.

Has the surname ever been spelled in a different way? There could be a few close variations which would make sense too.
When were your grandmother and her parents born? Did she have any siblings who stayed in Ukraine?

My home town is Volodymyr-Volynskyi which is about 30km from Lytovezh: http://goo.gl/maps/tbpdg and about the same from Ivanychi: http://goo.gl/maps/6IrgC
